MCAT Tutoring review by Avi in Georgetown, TX
So far the student and I have worked a lot on building a strong content foundation. He feels up to speed. We hadn't talked much about strategies for Verbal Reasoning and Passage Reading. We went over defining the scope of the passage, identifying the author's tone and opinion, noting outside opinions and information, reading for main ideas instead of details, and deciding on a central thesis for the passage. He felt more comfortable with these strategies, though he still needs to practice reading faster. I told him to make sure to do 1 V.R. passage per day. We worked through some questions, but won't spend too much time on question strategy just yet.

During this session we reviewed questions from practice MCAT exams the student wanted to go over. The questions were from the physical sciences section and involved concepts in physics and chemistry. They specifically addressed the topics of atoms, their structure, and orbitals of their electrons. Some also covered electricity, including certain components of circuits, voltage, and electrical fields produced by charges or capacitors. In addition, other questions focused on topics in chemistry, such as galvanic cells and calculations of potentials of cells.

Practiced with passages.

I answered various questions that the student had prepared for me as well as various passages on acids and bases. Overall, she did well on most of the passage-based questions that we covered, but she did need some assistance with questions that were more second-order or which required more careful attention to the passage. I did not feel that she has any significant content deficiencies, but could just use a brush-up of the topics that we covered and more passage-based practice on the aforementioned chapter. She will complete an additional practice exam prior to our next session, and we will use that exam to go over any incorrect answers that she did not understand.
