Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is beginning a home school program from an online school. He has not begun his work, so this was the first day he had to explore the website and read his expectations. We looked over each of his subjects and made a list of what was to be done by Wednesday. We spent time reading the rules for the online discussion board and worked on completing the Algebra 1 assignments as well as Writing. We discussed pacing and organized his work."
"I help the student prepare for a Western cultures test, reviewed his dashboard calendar and talked with him about his writing assignment. The Western cultures test was moved to Tuesday, so we looked at his dashboard calendar to make sure he had all assignments completed that were due on Friday. First he completed a Western cultures assignment that required a lot of reading to answer questions. The first reading section covered Florence and the influence of Renaissance art. The second reading section covered the influence of popes in art and rebuilding Rome. Next we worked through a chemistry assignment covering temperature influence on air volume. With the time remaining, we discussed his writing assignment. The next step was to develop a concept. We also discussed how his general organization and planning was going."
"The student took a States of Matter and phase change quiz. We reviewed all the problems on that quiz and he plans on taking it again. He then completed all the problems on four pages of his review packet for a science quiz on Friday."
"The student's blackboard reports show that she is turning most of her assignments in on time. This is a major improvement! We began our session by reviewing/organizing her plan for upcoming tests and homework. We did final edits for her English paper. And lastly, we chose her 5 topics that she will solidify in history class tomorrow. Her history exam is a week from today."
"With the first student, we worked on writing definitions in Italian for his Italian vocabulary words, in order to prepare for a style of test questions that his teacher regularly uses. With the second student, we worked on algebra and business homework."
"Today the student and I worked on his English essay examining the origins of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and how the tradition has changed over the years. Two of the key points we discussed were defining new concepts and terms within his paper and having him read his essay out loud to check for typos. He shows good writing technique in his essay. However, I want to work with him further on his organization. After his essay we went over his Spanish homework, which was identifying and using direct object pronouns. He grasps Spanish grammar with ease, but his ability to recall the meaning of words and understand questions and sentences is poor. I am having him make notecards for our next session to improve his retention and recollection skills. I will also be bringing extra Spanish homework for him to do over the break."
