Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Continued review of introductory math concepts and relevant homework, continuing work in algebra and honing in on math operations relevant to challenging algebra problems (exponents and radicals)."
"I had my first meeting with the student, and we discussed her expectations and goals for tutoring. She had completed one of the practice tests (timed) prior to our session. We reviewed her overall results and talked about which sections/concepts she had trouble with. Overall she did rather well on the practice SAT. Her results in the English/writing section indicate that she knows her grammar. Moving forward, we will focus more on the reading and math portions. In the critical reading section, she admits that she has a difficult time with the lengthier passages. I gave her some tips to try this week when taking another practice test section (reading questions first, breaking up the passage by doing some questions while she's reading etc.). For extra practice this week, she will be working through the critical reading and math sections of another practice test, while keeping in mind the strategies we discussed."
"During this session with the student, we reviewed sentence completion questions of the critical reading section and the math section. Because vocabulary is an area in which she could use more improvement, I chose to dedicate the first half of the session to testing and building her vocabulary through a packet of sentence completion questions only. We defined many of the words as we reviewed the exercises. I assigned her the last three exercises to complete on her own. On the math section, she did very well. She only skipped a few questions, and, of the ones she answered, she answered them all correctly. She seems more comfortable setting up and executing algebraic expressions, so this is noticeable improvement. As I discussed with the student's mother after our session, over the past few weeks, she has noticeably improved on not only her math skills/comfort but also on her reading comprehension and understanding of grammar and word usage. Her timed writing skills were already strong prior to our time together, but she has improved in that area as well."
