Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Concepts covered today included long division with decimals to the 2nd and 3rd place. The student was able to work through the problems correctly and understood the concept. We also worked with basic algebraic logic and reviewed the multiplication facts for X 8. He did well today."
"During the first part of the lesson, I reviewed prime and composite numbers with the student. She correctly identified all of the examples without assistance. For the next part of the lesson, I reviewed changing a mixed number into an improper fraction. She was able to solve these problems on her own. Next, I introduced a new concept that involved finding a percent of a given number. After a few examples, she was able to correctly solve problems with minimal assistance. Finally, I reviewed a few multiplication facts with her."
"During this session, the student completed a constructed response assignment to explain how she solved a division problem. She was able to use the traditional algorithm successfully, but she was unable to describe her process. I referred her back to the model in the book, and with verbal prompts, she was able to revise the written portion of her answer. We also worked on solving division word problems. During guided discussion, she was able to determine if the question was about the quotient, the remainder, or the quotient and the remainder. She completed four problems independently. She computed correctly for all four problems. On two of the four problems, she did not interpret the question correctly. I asked her to re-read the questions, and she was able to select the correct answer."
"During this session, we started by reviewing her 6's and 8's multiplication tables using flash cards. Then I had the student work on my iPad with a multiplication app for about 5-10 minutes. She did pretty well, and seemed a little more motivated this time to practice her facts using the iPad. She kept mentioning how she wanted to beat her best score. Next, we worked on long division with a double digit divisor, and she had a really good strategy that she used to find numbers that would get her closer to the dividend. After that, we reviewed how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. The student remembered the strategy that she learned at school, and used that to help her solve the problems. Overall, she had a great attitude today and worked really hard to complete her work!"
"During this session, we worked on a frog life cycle booklet for the student to keep. In order to improve her interest in math, specifically fractions, I brought in model magic so that we could make circles and cut them into pieces, so that she could physically see what fractions represent. She seems to be more of a kinesthetic learner. For homework, I gave her a fractions worksheet."
"During today's session, I began to introduce data and tables to the student. She did very well with both worksheets I gave her. She stayed focused and completed 7 activities before the end of the session. This is the most she has done in one session since I started tutoring her. I am very proud of her. She also worked on some inequalities so I could see what she understood. For the next session, we will work on money problems."
