Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session, we began working on ideas for her science fair project. We finished her assignment, which asked her to come up with a question (hypothesis) and a general plan for her project. We finished our session by going through the SAT vocabulary words that she has been working on for the past few months."
"During today's session, the student and I completed a review for an upcoming assessment. Our approach to this review was to have him complete each problem independently, explaining each step of the process, answering my probing questions, and having him ask questions for clarification. He was to complete over 98% of the review problems correctly on his first attempt. The only concern is still his attention to detail and watching his signs. Today, I did not notice any process errors; just minor computation mistakes. We discussed how he needs to take his time and especially watch his use of "signs" in basic operations."
"He and I did a crash course in Arithmetic. We covered order of operations, factorials, fraction, decimals, percents, geometric and arithmetic sequences, and factoring. He seemed to have difficulty quickly answering addition and multiplication questions, so I gave him an addition and multiplication table to study. It would be particularly helpful for him to make flashcards for these facts."
"He and I spent our session today going over his pretest from earlier this year as he was asked to complete corrections for homework. Many of the problems he was able to complete independently, as he has since mastered the concepts, such as problems involving domain, range, and basic factoring. He lost points on several problems due to careless errors, so we spent time discussing how to avoid and correct these possible mistakes. For example, we talked about solving equations in such a way as to minimize negatives and thus possible sign errors. We also discussed checking solutions using the graphing calculator or by assigning values to given variables. We were able to go over two new concepts today: point-slope equations and factoring by grouping. I have suggested to him that he completes extra practice on both of these topics. I have already sent him the materials for practice with factoring and will send along practice for the other concepts shortly."
"He and I worked on a POW (problem of the week) in Algebra. He had to solve the problem and then do a write up for the problem. We also worked on Science. In science, he had to graph vectors and create a velocity and time graph. He is doing well in Science but does not know his grade in Algebra. He has not taken a major test. He keeps up with all of his work in Algebra and understands the concepts"
"He and I worked on his review for his test on Wednesday. We studied functions, domain, range, discrete, and continuous functions. He understands these concepts very well. However, when we re-visited solving equations again, he still had some difficulties there."
