Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session with this student today began with review of converting a small scale model to the actual size. She did a lot better today than she did on Monday. Then we started working on circumference, area, radius, and diameter of a circle. We completed the area today and will continue with the remaining on Friday. We then read two stories, one story entitled, "The Cleansing Storm," which was a fiction story about a young girl that was involved in an incident, was accused of doing something that she did not do, and how it turned out. The student scored a 75% on this story. The next story was entitled, "Reaching Out Across the Generation Gap," and pretty much focused on generation gaps and some of the basics of how to reduce the gap. She scored an 81% on this story. She did well today."
"The student and I are refocusing on reading comprehension and ensuring that she is able to read fluently. We are spending more time on vocabulary and not simply learning how to read the words, but how to understand them individually and in-context to understand that the same word in a different context can have a completely different meaning. I will continue to assess her reading and comprehension directly in out sessions to keep her advancing. She is slowly learning her multiplication tables. Apart from not truly having them memorized, she is doing well with her calculations and is working out her word problems well. We are going to move on to division soon, but I would still like to see her have the multiplication tables completely memorized."
"The student and I began reading for his Latin American history class. We made progress with the assigned reading, and I took fourteen pages of notes for him to review the material."
"The student and I began the lesson with a word game. She then read a short 4th grade level passage and answered a series of questions that required her to use higher level thinking skills, including making an inference. She did a great job on this. Next, she completed a short writing activity in which she matched up types of writing with probable audiences. The last segment of the lesson centered around her summer reading assignment, Shiloh. We discussed the characters and conflict in the book. She completed a worksheet in which she gave evidence of certain character traits for Marty. This also required her to make inferences. Her homework is to read chapter two and three of Shiloh."
"The student and I began the session by discussing his summer reading book, Tangerine. We talked about the themes of the book, as well as the major conflicts. Then we began to work on the ACT prep book. We focused a lot on the order of passages and order of questions that he should use in order to maximize his time management technique. We also worked on identifying lead words in the questions and using those as a map when reading the passage. It was a great session, and I left him with the task of continuing to read Tangerine and paying attention to the themes."
"The student and I began the session by discussing the previous chapters we read yesterday. The student made some excellent predictions before we began today's reading of "Into the Gauntlet." The student and I read 4 more chapters today, stopping to take notes about characters, setting, and important action in the story. We also discussed higher level vocabulary and the student was able to give some great insights into the story."
