Matteson, IL Reading tutoring
First, the student and I played with "Phonics Monsters," where we practiced substituting out either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd letter of a CVC word and seeing how it changes. Then, we worked on long A_E words (VCe) and how words sound different after adding the "silent e." We did a couple drills where he added in the vowels and said the new word and another one where I described something and he had to read and find the word. We also read a leveled mini book and finally played with the rhyme cards. He seems to understand how the long A_E works and we will try to incorporate reading it in context next.

It was a pleasure working with the student, she is very open to suggestions. We started the class off with some visual activities. She finished a few word problems to complete her math homework. Then we worked on her Spanish homework, that involved bathroom vocabulary. Once she finished that, we went on to her science homework, I had her read out loud and she struggled but was able to answer the questions very well. At the end of the class I read the last part of The Minister's Black Veil, by Nathaniel Hawthorne out loud to her, so that she was able to take notes.
