Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued with inequalities, graphing on number lines, and worked a little bit on rates and probabilities. We went over the quizzes and problem sets. We also spent some time working through the Science textbook and covered some older materials to review, anticipating new material next week."
"In our session, the student and I worked on some games concentrating on multiplying and dividing by 7 and 8. After a quick assessment of the facts, it seems that she needs the most support in the 7's, 8's, and 9's times tables. She does have a great number sense. I saw this when we were reviewing the 9's and she was quickly able to use subtraction to see which number would be paired to equal 9. For example, for 9x7, we know it begins with a 6, and she was quickly able to say "6-3 because 6+3=9". I also gave her a quick assessment to see where she should begin her Math program. I plan on bringing materials to begin the program in two weeks. This program really helps with the automaticity of the facts."
"The student has an Algebra 2 quiz on Friday so we prepared for that and also began his homework which is due next week. We did sample problems from each section relevant to the exam, where we were able to identify the relevant equations and formulas that would be useful tomorrow. We moved on to the homework where he quickly found the hang of it. He needs to take each problem slowly, analyzing it with care. We will work to improve this ability."
"The student's class was working on proving trig identities. She had an assignment to complete that required the use of a variety of strategies in order to prove the given identities. We discussed possible methods of beginning each problem, such as getting everything into terms of sin and cos, or simplifying the expression on one side of the identity in any obvious way (such as using FOIL), or factoring and cancelling. She admitted to having trouble getting started, but still had good ideas as to how to start most of the problems. When one method doesn't seem to be working, she'll need to remember to try another strategy, and to look at the other side of the identity in order to get some idea of where she needs to go with any strategy she tries. Her algebra skills are continually improving, and are definitely useful in these types of problems."
"During this session, we completed another practice booklet for the math exam. The student did very well on all the questions and got all of them right. I believe the student is very prepared for book 1. On Thursday's session, we will go over book 3 to prepare for Friday's test."
"The student finished her homework and we previewed the next session for her class. The student is positive towards the materials covered. She has very good foundations in math and geometry with a very clear mind. She also organizes herself rather well. She just needs to do more practice to become more familiar with what was covered in class."
