"We worked on reading aloud, fluency, breathing, comprehension, and using context clues to figure out the meaning of words. We went through 2 short stories to work on comprehension, context clues, and inferring. The student likes to read "girly novels" so we started reading The One and Only by Emily Griffin. We will continue to work through this novel together."
"The student and I spent a little over an hour reading and practicing writing. My key observation is that when asked to write, he seems to stall. He can't seem to get anything on the paper, even though he has plenty of thoughts and details. I had him tell me what to write (thereby removing the "pressure" of writing) and he had a lot of ideas, examples, and some details. We need to bridge the gap between his thoughts and his writing. I told him that the next time he writes, to think of what he would tell me to write. When he did this, he did not stall. In future sessions we will focus on 1-2 key issues and getting him comfortable (1) learning them, (2) applying them, (3) and then applying them on his own with little to no prodding. The student is a smart and enthusiastic boy."
"Today, we reviewed some of the student's classwork from last month, covering cause and effect and the elements of a play (script, props, stage directions, dialogue). Then we practiced his biographical presentation; we've been reading and discussing the topic."
