How can a Math tutor help you?

Math is an important skill that we use every day. We utilize math when we exchange money, when we calculate the distance between places, and also when we tell time. Learning the foundational skills in math also helps students prepare for the more advanced math courses they will take in the future. Many students may get baffled and confused by this subject, and they may feel like they are not able to learn it. This is certainly not the case, but young students may still be turned by what they don't understand. These same students may not be getting the specific academic attention they require in a classroom, and they could be too shy to ask their teacher questions in front of their friends or classmates. Having a personal tutor can be the key to your child's success in math. A tutor could help them to understand the utility and wonder of the subject. If you're seeking a math tutor for your child in Lynn, MA, Varsity Tutors' educational directors are ready to help.

Math Tutoring review by Rebecca Eileen in Lynn, MA
Continuity, difference quotient, deriving the derivative formula, higher order derivatives, differentiation rules. Similar comments to last week. The student is VERY smart and has almost no problem once basic concepts are explained in non-math book terms. Will need harder practice problems.

Math Tutoring review by Thomas in Lynn, MA
The student has a test coming up this Thursday, and yesterday we worked on the test review guideline his teacher gave him in class. He is showing steady progress which is excellent. However, I noticed he has been having some difficulty with order of operations and so we worked on a variety of problems to address that and I recommended he do some practice problems when I am not around.

Math Tutoring review by Sarah in Lynn, MA
The student had a quiz coming up in his class, so together we discussed problems from a review guide his teacher gave him. First, we practiced graphing systems of equations to determine how many solutions there are, which was what we had worked on last week, so he had a good understanding of it. Then, we went over how to solve systems using substitution and elimination. Lastly, we practiced graphing inequalities. He had no trouble with simple inequalities, but found those with absolute values to be tricky, so I went over the theory of absolute value and how to quickly determine what the graph looks like. We were able to go over all of the topics on the upcoming quiz, and he seemed to be well-prepared for it.

Math Tutoring review by Anup in Lynn, MA
I met with the student and his parents today. He was struggling with transformations and shifting graphs, mainly due to the way the teacher was explaining it. We went over the general shape of some parent functions: quadratic, cubic, reciprocal, square root. I showed him a few tricks to determine the domain and range of functions. Then we went over how a parent function is transformed and shifted given the equation. He seems to be getting the hang of it.

Math Tutoring review by Brittany in Lynn, MA
We went through her homework set, focusing on step-by-step problem solving skills. Her understanding on negative numbers has improved, and we made strides in solving algebraic equations. The next few times I will want to focus on word problems (hopefully her teacher can provide some extra problems) and being more precise when calculating equations.

Math Tutoring review by Robert in Lynn, MA
The student was given a review packet over quadratics for his quiz on Monday. We talked about standard form, vertex form, and intercept form of parabolas. We practiced how to convert quadratics into different forms. I taught him the shortcut to find the vertex: (h,k).
