Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed several assignments. The first, on finding the area of sectors of circles, proved to be no trouble for the student, since it simply combined several recent concepts with which he is already comfortable. The second and third, on finding the area of regular polygons, were more troublesome, mostly because they involved new material, but after my explanations of the concepts (and my coaching to start each problem), the student seemed to get the hang of it."
"Today we worked through all of the readings from the student's book that were going to be covered on the test this week. He did well with most of the translation, and had obviously prepared for it in advance, which will help him for his test. I had him identify some ablative absolutes and a gerundive as we translated, to make sure he was getting the grammar down. After translating, I had prepared some content questions from the passage, and had him answer those. I also picked out a number of words to quiz him on vocabulary, in the same format as on the test. He did well with the content questions, and we talked about what sort of things his teacher is looking for."
"We did two math sections today and timed them to see how she was progressing. She's getting more confident but I'm trying to get her used to not using the calculator. It's not a big deal but it can save some time. I asked her to complete a writing section and a math section for next time."
"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall test-taking strategies."
"We went over arithmetic concepts (numbers, averages, inequalities) and did a lot of practice problems. I noticed that she is improving in her speed once she is familiar with the topic once again. I think it will take a little bit of time to get her up to speed for the test, but I think she will be prepared thoroughly."
"We reviewed a homework assignment and a quiz on margin, turnover, ROI and residual income. I reviewed the formula for these accounting terms with the student. He is focused and engaging. He has a tendency to hurry through the materials, so I intentionally slow down the instruction speed to make sure he is absorbing the concepts. He is on track with his goal."
