Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We first played "five chess." Then we did drawing of cartoons to learn new animals and practice saying body parts and colors. Today's new animals were: frog and spider. After cartoon drawing, we read a big book I brought, "When you Gave a Mouse a Cookie." She knew the story already, so I told her the story in Chinese and then asked her to repeat back to me what I said by hearing some of the Chinese words she knew. After this book, we read "The Animal Book" to practice reading the text and identifying the animals. She became much better at this and was reading alone almost simultaneously."
"In this session, we focused on verb conjugation and incorporating new vocabulary. Vocabulary included directions, food, common verbs, and clothing. We also learned the verb "gustar" and how to say I like. We practiced the new vocabulary and gustar together. I left the student with a set of exercises focusing on gustar."
"This session, we reviewed the use of reflexive verbs and making comparisons of equality and inequality. The student had a positive attitude toward practicing his study sheet exercises and doing variations on them that I added for further practice. I wrote out some sentences for additional practice and showed him how to vary these sentences with subject changes. He received a quiz grade on this material of an "A," and he will have a test on Monday. I think he will do well."
"This week, the student and I went over several different packets to cover topics such as preterite vs. imperfect, ser vs. estar, verbs like gustar, reading comprehension, and writing practice. We began with reading as he and I translated some passages line by line and then answered various questions about them. He did a great job of correctly translating the lines from each passage, and we then moved on to exercises for each of the other topics, filling in blanks with the correct choice of ser vs. estar and practicing writing by answering some miscellaneous questions. We finished with some conversation in Spanish, talking back and forth to practice asking and answering common questions that arise in daily conversation. We will continue with this and more exercises from our packets next time, focusing on vocab and questions that are most common in conversation."
"We reviewed stem-changing verbs, E to IE for conjugation in present tense. We also practiced vocabulary and conversational skills in Spanish. I helped the student translate a document from Spanish into English involving clothing and colors."
"In this session, we discussed study strategies for the student's test. He should make several sentences for each chapter that summarize the main points of action, with as much detail as possible."
