Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Marysville, WA Statistics tutoring
The student and I worked on rational functions. We started by discussing what the domain is referring to. We worked on understanding why it is important and how knowing the domain will help with graphing rational functions. We used limits to find the horizontal asymptote. Finally we plotted a few strategic points to graph the function. We looked at how to change graphs and what stretching a graph will do. We spent a good amount of time playing with these functions so that he had time to absorb the information.

Today the student and I worked on her algebra two homework and her chemistry post lab/homework. For math, we covered multiplying complex fractions. For chemistry, we worked on the ideal gas laws. She is doing very well and seems to understand the information.

Today was my first session working with the student. She's preparing for the AP calculus test in May and needs some help preparing before she takes it. My goal today was to do two things: to work on her current lessons and to figure out where her weaknesses are in her past material. I found that there are a lot of things throughout calculus that she definitely needs some more work on. In our lesson today, we covered two of the most essential parts of calculus: integration by substitution and integration by parts. We were able to incorporate this into her current lesson on solving improper integrals. As we move forward, I want to make sure that she is understanding her current material while still reinforcing problematic areas in the past for her. Through this, she should be much more prepared for her AP test than she would have been otherwise. I hope to help her get a high score on the test!

We reviewed a previous test. The student didn't really have a problem with the math. We went over the formula for calculating Z for both means and proportions. We also went over the normal distribution chart to make sure he can correctly obtain a p-value. The main concern was his ability to recall definitions and interpret them in specific context. We went over specific definitions (p-value, difference between z- and t-tests, type 1/type 2 errors). I showed how the definitions can be interpreted in many ways, so it was important that he maintains a version that he feels comfortable with. We completed all problems on the test that he wanted to review. I left him feeling more confident in the section and more prepared to work with the topics. He has a test on March 4th.

Today I met with the student, and we focused on Calculus, and on the application of calculus to real world problems. Since there was so little to talk about at a conceptual level, she worked through quite a few example problems.

We specifically covered solving cost/revenue breakeven points, determinants, and systems of inequalities today. I had her work the most with the arithmetic (solving equations involving fractions and long division). I advised on shortcuts to solve the arithmetic math. She understands the fundamentals, so she is working on more practice and confidence in doing these problems.
