Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Marysville, WA Reading tutoring
The student has two things that he needs to work on: reading more closely and he needs to learn how to organize his schoolwork. We read from his biography of King Tut, on whom he's doing a report, and worked on taking notes -- which ideas are big ideas, which ideas are not worth writing down, organizing notes by chapter. I also asked him to bring me all his papers for next session -- before we get reading we'll organize them.

The student and I worked a little bit on phoneme awareness (listening to sounds and rhymes and identifying beginning and ending sounds of words). He definitely seems to understand this, but occasionally he gets some similar letters confused (b/d, m/n, etc.). We also played with cards to find rhyming words. Next, we worked on reviewing a page in a sight word workbook, for Yes/No and Girl/Boy. Finally, I asked him to pick out a book he likes to read and we went through a few pages together. I think the book he picked is above his level, but he tried very hard to work through it with me and seems to understand how to decode most words. We will need to work more on vowels that sounds like their names (long vowels). In the future, I will print out or bring some lower level books for us to read together.

The student and I worked on his reading comprehension. We read through a picture book he had acquired from school, pausing each page to review concept comprehension and the definitions of any words I deemed above grade level. We also reviewed some basic math worksheets, focusing on his ability to identify geometric shapes. I left some recommendations for books slightly more advanced than the ones provided by his school, as he is above grade level in his reading, and I'd like next week to review on his knowledge of phonics + sight words to better understand his progress in reading comprehension.

We read a passage on the Ice Age and completed the questions. We also watched 3 short video clips on the different scientific theories for the causes of glacial periods. Then, we targeted three vocabulary words from the passage and looked up their meanings online.

We read the "Big Blueberry Barf-Off" the whole time. He read very well and is adding great tone and inflections to his reading now! He even told me he is writing so much faster and better since we started. Music to my ears! He did a wonderful job making complete sentences to answer the questions.

We read three articles. One was a short fiction story about a girl in a spelling bee. During this story, we talked about summarizing each paragraph with a picture or simple phrase. We continued talking about underlining only short phrases, instead of underlining too much. The second story we read was a short passage from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." We answered questions about "cause and effect." The student seemed to do well on this concept. Lastly, I read to her a short biography about the first black woman to receive a patent in the United States. She was able to answer questions about specific details. Overall, she does better when she is able to underline and to look back in a story. In the future, I will work with her more on memory and those rare situations when she is not able to look back.
