Today we worked on calculating sales tax, rebates, discounts, and finding which items were the best value. The student seemed to understand these problems very well after we did a few. Rebates are a little more tricky for her but after practice she seems to understand it better.

This was the last session. Instead of introducing the students to a new topic, we just continued with the quadratic equation. The first student seems to have no trouble with it anymore! Overall, the students are fantastic students, very motivated to learn, and are not challenged nearly enough in school. It has been a pleasure tutoring them :)

The student and I discussed various topics relating to graphing rational functions. This included using the parent function to graph a rational function by shifting. We identified the a, h, and k. We found the domain and range of the functions and built a table to support were the function belonged. By the end of the session the student seemed fluent with the material and needed to complete her homework on her own. She showed me the score she received from her previous homework assignment which she earned a 100% on.

We met on Wednesday evening at the Library and reviewed the student's math. He is studying proportional relationships in finding the area of a shape. He has a general concept on the skill, so we are working on a stronger sense of how to manipulate the equation. We reviewed a variety of problems in this skill as well.

We covered odd exercises on chapter 7.1 which was application of integration. These problems covered motion. That is, determining displacement versus position and the time intervals when motion was either positive, negative or zero. Determining anti-derivatives sometimes involved the substitution rule. We graphed the functions to determine symmetry, where the velocity was zero and where the motion was either positive or negative. One of the functions was graphed incorrectly so the calculated answer didn't match the graph. Further investigation discovered the error in the graph so we are now in agreement with the calculated answer. The student will email me when he needs help in preparing for his next test.

Today was ALL about simplification of expressions involving exponents. We started with some material similar to what was covered yesterday before we had negative and positive exponents mixing and matching. The student finally settled on using the "visual method" for resolving exponents on a base-by-base basis. In the last 3 minutes we covered "Lateral Surface Area of a Cylinder" and I reminded him to check his answer when he solves an equation.
