Session Summaries by French Tutors

Marysville, WA French tutoring
We started with the student's homework. She had some workbook problems using vocabulary from her textbook about activities tourists might do on vacation. After her homework, we read an easy-reader book. After reading through it once, I had her go back and translate what each page meant. Then I asked her comprehension question in French and had her respond in French. For the last 5-10 minutes, we did a worksheet reviewing adjective agreement for masculine/feminine nouns.

The student and I zoned in on his knowledge of the past perfect tense and imperfect tense today. I used an online quiz as a tool to gauge his knowledge and to talk about conventional situations to use both tenses. The quiz asked to fill in the blanks in the sentence with either the past perfect or imperfect tense, and it also gave variations on the conjugations as possible answers. I had him read each sentence aloud and then attempt to find the correct answer. If he had questions, we would discuss. If he knew the right answer, I would ask him why, just to continue to remind him about the norms for each form of the past tense. At the end of the session, I had him reiterate and write down situations where one would use the imperfect, based on the quiz. We also identified the two situations which were most difficult for him to identify the tense: using a "when" clause and with verbs and feeling and knowing. He took notes throughout the quiz and also wrote down new vocabulary words (which we had discussed). For the most part, the student was able to draw upon prior knowledge and use his intuition to come up with the answer during the quiz. I wanted him to explain why he chose each answer just to make sure that he understood the conventions and rules behind it. My "win" for the day was when I asked him is this was helpful. He said, "Yeah, it's better than class," and that works for me!

I tutored the student for an hour this Sunday. We went over the verbs - vouloir, pouvoir, and devoir. I had her conjugate all three verbs multiple times and correct her spelling mistakes. I then created exercises on all three verbs that required her to translate a sentence into French using the correct version of each verb. We did not have time to go over the vocab but she felt confident that she could go over the words on her own time.
