Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This week, the student and I had our final set of review sessions. He said that linear algebra went pretty well, and I suspect he'll know enough to tackle the DE final without much trouble. It's been a pleasure working with him this semester."
"This week, the student practiced solving for variables in preparation for his final. I believe he has the skills he needs for the next test."
"This week, the student was preparing for a test retake in algebra on solving systems of equations and maximizing/minimizing functions. We went over the original test to prepare. He does well on max/min and plotting systems of equations. He could use more practice on solving systems of equations, though. He much prefers elimination to substitution as a solution technique, which works in the majority of cases, but can cause extra work. Additionally, he sometimes drops information from the original question when translating between words and equations. We spent some time creating a logical step process for solving these problem types, which should help come test time."
"Though the student has moved on to a new section involving exponential growth and decay, we spent the session today reviewing some of the more advanced concepts of logarithms (which are much less intuitive than the new section). The student is doing an excellent job of grasping logarithms, but can benefit from practicing as many problems as possible to avoid making common mistakes (such as seeing log(124)/5 as log(124)/log(5) or log(124/5)). The student is definitely on track to succeed in College Algebra this semester!"
"To help with approaching word problems, we worked on some basic Sudoku puzzles. These are good for training a student not to guess, but to logically arrive at a conclusion. In order to solve these puzzles, students must work in 3 dimensions. She did a very good job--she has the 4x4 puzzles down."
"Today at the student's request, we covered L'Hopital's rule, doing ten problems on a worksheet she had. Then we worked four very complex integration by parts questions that she got wrong on a previous test. She will be able to turn them in, to eventually change a grade. The session went extremely well."
