Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student went through his hw and chapters 1,2 and parts of 7 of his textbook. He is very smart and catches on to things quickly. He was in good shape already and had minor issues with stereochemistry that he quickly learned. He plans to go the pre med and med school next and I think he can make it, knowing how sharp and bright he is."
"The student and I completed a study guide for her upcoming Chemistry exam. I am confident that she will do well. She scored an 83 on her most recent math exam."
"We reviewed for his chemistry exam states of matter and the student's Spanish quiz on indirect and direct possessive pronouns."
"In the last few sessions, we worked through the student's textbook up through Chapter 9, discussing each section and going over practice book assessments. Now, we will devote all of our efforts to ensuring that he completes all 17 units from his independent study chemistry workbook in time for the July 22nd due date. He completed Unit 2 on matter & change, discussing elements, elemental abundance, mixtures vs substances, chemical symbols and formulas, chemical changes/properties, physical changes, and extensive vs intensive properties. We also worked through most of the Unit 3 material on scientific measurements, including units, scientific notation, accuracy, precision, mass, volume, density, and conversion factors. He initially had difficulty working with scientific notation and converting between units, but he had a solid understanding by the end of the session. He will continue working through Unit 3 for our session Wednesday."
"In the second half of this session, we covered stereoisomers, enantiomers, and diastereomers. I provided some techniques for determining priority and cis/trans versions of the molecules. I provided some more follow-up materials for the topics we're covering tomorrow."
"In this session the student and I discussed isotopes, ions, and the law of constant composition. First with isotopes, we discussed the concept of isotopes and how to distinguish between different types isotopes using protons and mass number. Next was ions; we discussed naturally occurring ions in nature and the charge associated with it. Furthermore we discussed how ratios of atoms can be used with law of constant composition to find different amounts. The student seemed to understand the material and grasp concepts quickly. Visual examples were really helpful, so I will try to include more visual examples in future sessions. Overall it was a great session. Our goal is to increase her test scores."
