Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Marion, TN Pre-Calculus tutoring
Covered vector and parametric equations in preparation for the student's final exams. She struggled a bit with some trigonometry identities substitution to solve for parametric functions; however, more practice would certainly help, and I recommend that she complete the homework set before the final exam.

During our session, the student and I primarily went over the simplification of trigonometric functions utilizing half, double, sum, and difference formulas. He does not struggle with the concept but rather the mathematical manipulation required for each problem. We practice simplifying improper fractions, factoring, and FOILing of certain quadratic-like expressions. We will continue to work on this concept next time.

During this lesson with the student, we worked on filling in his notes from class. He has been learning about the standard equation for an ellipse and how to graph ellipses. He had trouble following the notes in class, so we went over the note packets together and filled in what he missed. We then went over the examples in the note packets. Then, we started reviewing for his midterm in 2 weeks. He reviewed the unit circle. We went through his notes and worksheets from earlier in the term. I pulled out a couple of worksheets that would be good for him to use as a review and advised him to work on these in his spare time. I also took his test papers so I can prepare a review similar to the test questions for the future.

During this session we went over some problems that Willa was assigned for homework on the topics of creating trigonometric functions and some graphing. The student was able to solve the problems we went over with very little help and almost no errors. We also reviewed a practice problem that I had assigned her, and I helped clarify and correct and issue she had been having trouble with. I made sure that she knew how to double check her work properly and stressed the importance of writing out her calculations in order to avoid calculation mistakes. I asked her to read the chapter on the topic that her next exam will be on and to solve the examples included in that chapter for next session.

During this session, I helped the student review for her math unit test. We started by finishing up her study guide (she had to make her own) for the logarithms and exponentials section. Then we went through a quiz that she recently took and didn't do too well on. As we went through the problems, she got most of the questions correct quickly and easily. For the past couple of weeks, I have felt that she has been doing extremely well during our sessions, but that her quiz and test scores don't match with her performance in our sessions. She thought this was strange as well, and commented that she may have been tired and/or nervous for her past couple of tests, resulting in lower scores. I gave her a little advice to that effect. I think she might benefit from finding a de-stressing or calming routine that works well for her, and I gave her a few examples of ways I relax before exams.

During this session, the student and I worked together on several problems dealing with trig identities. She had a little difficulty at first knowing which identities to use and how to figure out the next step of each problem, but improved after practice.
