Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the boys had good concentration and we were able to get through all of the multiple choice questions for the 4 passages assigned. I have been really encouraging the boys to make sure they find textual evidence for all of their answers."
"Today's session went well. I started off the session with writing warm-up. The student had to write sentences using the words "thin", "think", and "much". After the writing practice, we did her reading assignments from her workbook. The topics today were "Rhode Island", and "Vermont". We did some reading comprehension, as well as word play in terms of finding rhyming words, coming up with word blends, and using "Rhode Island" and "Vermont" to find other words. Following this assignment, she was introduced to a new math topic-- estimation. She was able to pick up the concept very quickly and complete her short assignments. After quick break, I had her read a book of her choice. Today's pick was "The Lego Movie". Overall, she is showing improvement."
"We reviewed homework assigned and then proceeded to complete the practice test that I assigned him earlier. He did very well, especially on summarizing the main idea, which had been his weakness when we began."
"The student read aloud. It was great to see how much he has improved since our first session. He was able to tackle a book that he initially thought might be too difficult and read it with little struggle. He did great answering questions at the end of each chapter. I think if he keeps practicing reading on his own, he can continue to improve."
"The student read aloud from Ghost Town at Sundown for twenty-five minutes. He occasionally gets a bit distracted while he reads, but always gets right back on track. He is a solid reader, and understands what he reads very well. His Math skills are getting truly excellent! Today, we worked on organizing data with bar graphs. He explained everything to me, and really understands the concept! He was assiduous about writing complete sentences as answers to the word problems as well. Gold Star!"
"The student shared an essay he wrote for class and the teacher's comments. From that essay, I was able to see that he had made common grammatical errors with word choice, fluency and conventions. This was particularly helpful in focusing the next tutoring session. I brought a handout regarding comma rules and we went through the ones that seemed to have caused him the most difficulty in his essay. I then circled the rules he needed to focus on, and let him keep the comma rules sheet for future reference. The student also brought a practice ACT English test that we reviewed together and we went through several questions he missed, looking at why he missed each one. We also discussed how important it would be for Lane to do more practice ACT tests (or similar questions) in a timed environment, to get used to pacing himself. We also talked about the importance of keeping a planner with assignment due dates, and writing in when he would work on his assignments. The student was a little uncertain about using his planner, but otherwise very receptive to the overall session. I told him to be sure to bring any English assignments to the next tutoring session."
