Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Marietta, GA Physiology tutoring
We covered: static electricity, including calculation of Coulomb force between two charges; electric circuits including parallel, serial resistors, Kirchhoff laws for current and voltage, basic voltage/current equation, and power dissipated in the resistor equation. In the chapter "waves," we covered basic definitions, such as wavelength, speed of wave, frequency, and period of the wave. Then we solved problems relating to fundamental frequencies of wind/string instruments, Doppler effect, and more. The student is confident in the subject matter. Having covered the concepts for the entire test, and numerous practice tests, now is the time for student to practice actual problem solving using real tests. New tests will be provided in the next lesson. In the meantime, student is encouraged to review all chapters covered so far on his own.

The student was working on uniform charge fields, so we did about 10 problems from one chapter and six or seven from another chapter. She has a solid B in the course and is doing fairly well. We also used Kirchhoff's Law and the use of parallel and series circuits where we tracked the voltage drop going across a resistor as well as going across resistors in parallel. We also saw how current behaves in the presence of series and parallel resistors.

We covered how to calculate the total resistance of a combination circuit, how to use Kirchhoff's rules to determine the current through and voltage across each resistor, the definition of capacitance, the function of a capacitor in a circuit, how the capacitance is dependent upon the geometry of the capacitor, electric potential energy and how it is related to the amount of work needed to move charge in an electric field, and how to calculate the voltage of a point from the superposition of the voltages from several point charges.

We discussed the student's final proposal analysis. She chose the hypothesis and applied the appropriate statistical tests. We ran the t-test and regression, and she started working on the write-up and descriptive statistics table. All that remains is to finalize the summary and submit it by Sunday.
