Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with student 1 and student 2 for this session. They work very well when paired with each other, were well-behaved, and completed almost all of the questions. I modeled how to answer the first few multiple choice questions, and they completed the rest on their own, with a little guidance. They still need to work on reading closely and in finding strong evidence in the text instead. It helped to work on selections from the books, which they were excited about."
"Met with mother & student to determine goals. Reviewed her latest report card and teacher comments. They want her to become a more independent reader and to work on inflection as well as challenging herself more. She read parts of two chapter books to me and we worked on getting her to slow down and pay attention to punctuation, new words and expression."
"The scholars continued their work on the poem "The Racer" today with their short answer responses. They had to summarize the major points of the poem and analyze a specific line from the poem."
"We began this session by continuing to work through documents and multiple choice questions. The student has a good handle on these already, so our focus is on the most challenging questions, which still sometimes give him trouble. Then, we reviewed a number of literary devices and began looking at some new vocabulary words. Afterwards, I quizzed him on the material we'd reviewed, and he did quite well recalling devices such as Allegory, Assonance, Irony (Situational, Verbal, Dramatic), etc. I also asked him to buy a composition book that we will begin using as a vocabulary journal at upcoming sessions. We will continue working on building his vocabulary by introducing new words and using them in sentences that test his understanding of grammar rules."
"I found my domino set that was up to 12's and the student loved that the math dominoes were a little harder. From dominoes we did a worksheet that had her identify between D's and B's, combine beginning letter sounds and the -in word family, as well as working with his weekly words. From there we practiced a couple of sentences that she could use for his spelling test. We finished the session with the sight word matching game, with the board that I made that adds reading/math practice."
"The student and I worked on his essay about his favorite song. He received an 85 on the first essay we worked on."
