"Today, we went over the format, timing, and scoring of the SSAT exam in details. Then we finished the essay the student started in the last session. Then I assigned him an essay from a past exam - going through the length and time frames as well. After that we tackled the comprehension section of the SSAT test, which was timed. I left him with a few tips on time management for that section and reiterated, in SSAT, time management contributes to 80% of the success."
"We spent some time this week looking at affixes and roots to solve for synonyms and analogies. The student is getting very good at spotting analogy answers. We worked on math with the remaining time, covering squares, square roots, and a few simple cubes. She continues to be bright and engaged, and she asks great questions. For homework, I asked her to go on with her vocabulary study and I'd give her a synonym test on the words we've covered so far the next week."
"Today I brought the student a few sample sets of questions from a 7th Grade SSAT exam. This would qualify as "middle level." Upon first glance at today's questions, both the student and I noticed that they definitely seemed a bit simpler and straightforward. And appropriately, the student pretty much motored through the math and verbal sections with real skill and poise. We then moved on to an analogies section, which tested his vocabulary work. The student has numerous times expressed reservations about his vocabulary. While there were a few terms he did not recognize, we pored back through those hiccups after we finished answering the questions. The last half hour of the session was actually a really stimulating chat through some terms, where both he and I tried to create real-world examples of more obscure words."
