Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, we read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. Each genre had different specific focuses, but overall, fluency and self-monitoring reading was the big idea. With the fiction texts, we worked on retelling and noticing how the settings change throughout the text and how that plays into the problem of the story. With nonfiction, we focused heavily on noticing text features and why the author included them. We also talked about ways to retell nonfiction and how to include only the important information. Some of the text features, such as interpreting diagrams were difficult for her at first. We will continue to work on nonfiction text features during our next session. I left some books for her to practice with until then."
"Student's winter break assignment is to read a biography and answer certain questions about it in paragraph form. We worked through a biography of Babe Ruth chapter by chapter, answering the questions as we came on the answers. He remained focused and worked hard the whole hour. An excellent session."
"The student continues to make great improvement. We did timed reading with his Round 1 and 2 words from school, and read two books. He wrote several sentences - both his writing skills (motor skills) and spelling/phonics continue to improve. He did a stellar job focusing today. I will continue to increase the difficulty of vocab words so that he starts to stretch his comfort zone."
"During this session, the student and I worked on his community service essay for school. He continues to struggle with forming complete sentences and organizing his thoughts into well-rounded paragraphs and arranging them into a flowing essay. We reorganized some of the sentences and thoughts in the essay we had from the last session, and worked on each paragraph individually, and then added transitions to give the essay a logical flow of thought. We were able to look at the requirements for the essay online through his high school's website, which made the writing process much easier."
"For the first half of the session, we focused on logic, this week covering necessary and sufficient conditions. This was something the student struggled with over the summer, so I was really pleased to see how much his grasp on the material had increased - he got nearly all the questions right on a practice worksheet I made and his homework! The second half, we worked on putting together study materials for his pre-comps, as we know all of the vocabulary words for the test. I had him not only do definitions, but also sentences with examples of the words."
"Great work from both boys today! They were eager to learn, write, read, and spell. The first student continues to recognize sight words with ease and improve the ability to sound out new words. The second student is an avid speller and a careful reader."
