Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the 20 or so verbs that the student has for a test this week. She is required to know their definitions, principle parts, and tense forms. There are also a number of irregular verbs. She did a lot of drilling and studying, and is well prepared for the test."
"This session we discussed the student's grade composition again. We spent our entire session catching up on the grammar he's been learning. We practiced translating and applied translating strategies (such as starting with the verb), and reviewed declension and conjugation paradigms. He was particularly struggling to remember these paradigms, so I asked him to memorize on his own time the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension endings, and the passive voice endings. I also sent him a video to watch on the passive voice to help explain the endings, and an interactive online tool to use to practice the declensions. He will need to have these endings memorized in order to do well on his upcoming test."
"Today we worked on preparing for the student's Latin exam this week, as well as the final exam coming up in a couple weeks. We reviewed adjectives and participles, among other grammatical topics."
"Today, the student and I met for our second session. She has communicated that she would like to really focus on conversational practice to improve her fluency in Spanish. A classmate of hers, joined us for this lesson. We began with an interpersonal conversation where we talked about various topics, and I provided corrections when necessary. We then moved on to section II, which included translation exercises. Within the translations, we went over different grammar points such as tense agreement, subject/verb agreement, orthography, present subjunctive, preterite tense verb conjugations, indirect and direct object pronouns, verbs of movement, and past participles. Both girls engaged enthusiastically during our lesson today and asked thoughtful questions. We will review more irregular verbs and spend time going over the subjunctive in future lessons. We conducted the entire lesson in Spanish and only used English to clarify."
"We finished the last of the small paragraph translations, and got started preparing for the last stretch of the summer homework, which involves speaking (a conversation and a speech) and two short essays. I told the student to have a summary for one of the essays written out, and to download an app so we can do the recordings for the speaking assignments."
"We practiced reading comprehension, verbal skills, and writing in Spanish. The student is improving and expanding his vocabulary as well as his speed in writing and speaking. He is making fewer mistakes and is able to catch his grammar mistakes."
