Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The students focused on writing and reciting Mandarin passages for their oral exam. Both did well today. Student 1 memorized and recited his assignment very well, and both were enthusiastic towards the material. Both should practice family, a friend's visit, and weekly calendar a few more times before Tuesday. They are improving significantly!"
"We did a review of Lesson 1 through Lesson 3 today, and both students did a very good job. They remembered what we covered in class before and they were familiar with the conversation drills we have learned so far. I was pleased by their performance in the review. Later on, we did a pronunciation practice, and went over second and fourth tones. We also learned the first text in Lesson 4 and we'll continue to learn the second text next time."
"We reviewed words about numbers, colors, animal words, foods, objects in the yard since we were in the backyard half of the session. We reviewed words like slide, ladder, rope, tree, grass, flower, ball, truck, tire, and worm."
"We covered consonants - specifically the pronunciation of b and p as well as various words that start with b and p. I used a dictation test to teach the pronunciation and flashcards to teach vocabulary. Finally, I graded their homework and gave them star stickers for work well done. They seemed to really enjoy this."
"We covered his teacher's focus this week on how to ask someone how many people does he/she has. We also worked on how to answer that, as well as how to ask about other items in a family, like birds, houses, and so on. The student will bring some schoolwork to the session on Friday, and we will continue with that."
"We covered the student's Mandarin homework translation questions and some other grammar questions in this session. The student's pronunciation is generally very good, but she needs to improve her first tone and third tone. She felt that she understood the material better after it was reviewed. I tried to help her understand the tones by imagining the first tone as a beep and the second tone as a question and by breaking up the sentence into parts before letting her repeat the whole sentence after me. Moving forward, she should practice more on trying to say the whole sentence with correct tones without looking at Pinyin, which I believe would improve quickly after a few sessions."
