Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Lyons, IL Phonics tutoring
The student and I discussed her graded thesis on Keats's "Ode on a Grecian Urn." We identified a starting point for the body paragraphs, and developed a rough sketch of different items to be discussed in the paper. The student is going to put together a draft for her conference with her teacher in advance of the final submission date.

Lyons, IL Phonics tutoring
We worked on creating different essays from a variety of prompts. We brainstormed one topic together (at what age should teens be allowed to earn a driver's license?) and the student began work on creating an outline on a second prompt (should teens have to earn an allowance?).

Lyons, IL Phonics tutoring
The first student and I started off with sequence and creative writing practice. He put picture panels in the correct order so they told a story, then we wrote a story to go along with the pictures. We talked about how every story needs characters, setting, and conflict, and how the conflict needs to be solved by the end of the story. He made sure to include a theme in his story. We worked on correcting spelling and grammar errors (your/you're) in his writing. After that, we did an experiment with pepper and soap. Then he wrote down the instructions of what he did (memory, chronological, and writing practice). Then we went through the instructions and corrected mistakes and added information to make the instructions more clear. The second student and I started by reading an article about surface tension. We practiced the "chunk and summarize" strategy of writing the main idea of each paragraph. He added "surface tension" to his personal dictionary. After that, we did the same experiment with pepper and soap. Then he wrote down the instructions of what he did (memory, chronological, and writing practice). Then we went through the instructions and corrected mistakes and added information to make the instructions more clear. We really focused on handwriting, and when he wants to he can write beautifully. After writing the procedural steps, we wrote a creative story about pepper and soap. He personified the characters, and we talked about every story needs characters, setting, and conflict, and how the conflict needs to be solved by the end of the story. He wrote a first draft but forgot to solve his story's conflict, so he then wrote a second draft using the plot map as a guide so he didn't forget any pieces of the story, and then wrote a final, more detailed third draft.
