Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session, the student and I mainly covered Algebra. We went through the homework I assigned him at our last session, which consisted of interpreting equations and matching equations to graphs. The student showed good comprehension of the less-complex problems. We backed up and went over some of the basics again, and I made up some quizzes for him to test his comprehension and make sure he understands how to solve different types of problems. We focused on the equation of a line (y=mx+b) and explained how each letter represents something (the slope, the y-intercept). I made up a quiz with several practice problems that involved rearranging equations so that they matched the format of the equation of a line, identifying the slope and the y-intercept, and matching line equations to graphed lines. I had him complete them without any help and he was able to work out the majority of them on his own. At the end of the lesson it was clear that he gained a better understanding than what he showed previously. We then focused on Science. I went through class notes and practice problems with the student regarding lab safety and the scientific method, on which he has a test. He showed very good comprehension of all of the topics discussed. Lastly, we covered one additional unit on commas, which focused on when to use a comma between two adjectives. We will continue to work on this as some of the situations are tricky."
"We covered inequalities, ahead of what the student is learning in class. We solved inequalities, graphed on number lines, and practiced interval notation."
"In the last session with the student, we covered several questions on the STAR practice exams. Olivia has a grasp of the concepts and we will be practicing more problems to make sure that she is prepared to take full length exams."
"The student and I began the session by discussing his exam last week and his coursework for the next semester. We then did review of many of the concepts he covered last semester. We practiced algebraic equations. I've seen significant improvement. We finished the session by reviewing some systems of equations, which he did very well with after initially struggling. With more practice and a smaller class size next semester, I think we'll see continued improvement in the next semester."
"For algebra we worked on completing the square, and for trig we worked on reference angles, working with trig functions on the calculator, inverse trig functions, and we broke down the unit circle so she could better understand its use."
"It is always pleasure to work with this student. We reviewed her homework on properties of exponents. Even though it was first time she studied it, she did not have much problem. I gave her five competition questions on the topic. She had hard time with the questions, but she was on the right track on most of them. I will continue giving her challenge questions."
