Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session with the student, we worked on the critical reading section and the essay. Because she expressed comfort with timed writing at our first session, I wanted to gauge our baseline on the essay. After 25 minutes elapsed, I read her essay and discussed her approach to it. While her essay was evident of adequate mastery of the topic and language, there was an inherent lack of clarity to it with the introduction not in sync with the conclusion. Though she showed sufficient use of language and excellent reference to the quotation in the prompt, grammar errors, specifically comma splices, were common, which will be an area of focus for future sessions. For the remainder of the session, we finished the critical reading section from the previous session. She did very well on the passages we worked on today, showing marked improvement from our previous session. I have asked her to read some chapters out of her SAT prep book on how to improve sentences and how to structure the essay."
"We began with an overview of the SAT and how it is structured / scored, touching on guessing strategy, before jumping right into math strategy. The student quickly got a handle on the various plugging in strategies to optimize time efficiency. She noticed how specific the problems can get and that she should be careful in the reading of the prompts. We practiced through several problem types, utilizing the strategies, and touched on some fundamentals. I will send her some additional problems to further practice the strategies."
"Debriefed with student on her previous exam scores and her goals for the second test. Student reported that she scored 1950 on SAT without really studying, took test "cold." Student reported that her biggest problem areas were SAT writing/ reading and ACT science was a problem as well. Requested HW as needed. Student has a handle on basic format and layout of test as well as guessing strategies. Began work on an SAT writing section, scored 11/14 in 8:35. Errors were due to not recognizing comma splice, passive voice, subject verb splits with prep phrases. Walked through student's approach to SAT essays and fine-tuned to maximize efficiency and clarity of writing. Practiced organizing thoughts during pre-writing stage quickly based on certain prompts. Then had student take 20 minutes to produce a practice essay from start to finish. Made comments on writing - strengths/ what could improve. Student needs to develop thesis statements more, improve smoothness of transitions, and finish with a strong conclusion that clearly stands behind her position on argument she is introducing in thesis."
