Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Lynwood, CA Latin tutoring
The student recently began to learn the imperfect and perfect tenses in class, so the translation which we went over today was primarily concerned with that. She recognized the imperfect and perfect forms well, and I was impressed with her ability to recall topics such as the predicate adjective and predicate nominative which we discussed in our previous session. Along with that, she has shown improvement with regards to recognizing adjectives and adverbs, and understanding how adjective-noun agreement works. She only needs to work a bit more on recognizing the accusative and ablative cases. For our next session, planned in two weeks, we may look at passages from the Passio of Perpetua and Felicity, since she may need to return her school textbook by then.

Today we reviewed a verb synopsis. The student did well on this; he has retained what we have been going over and has gotten a solid base of all the indicative verb forms. The next (and easier) thing that we went over was his quick recognition of noun cases. We also reviewed the translation he did for homework. The sentences he was able to translate he did well on, and we went over the ones he had trouble with. His homework is another translation and a review of the first three declensions.

The student and I reviewed the vocabulary from chapter 3, discussed cases, and translated sentences from English to Latin. We continued these exercises with the vocabulary from chapter 4. I'm spending a good bit of time on translating sentences from English to Latin. In my experience, it really forces the Latin student to think through parts of speech and which cases to use. Often, she seems to translate the Latin in her textbook by 'feel', i.e. she knows what to expect because the sentences are simple, so she's not forced to pay close attention to the grammar. By using a similar simple sentence structure but asking her to go from English to Latin, she has to pay very close attention to parts of speech and case.

The student did great tonight! We finished the lesson on first-, second-, and fourth-conjugation verbs in the present tense, then the student chose the explanation/exercise set concerning the irregular verb "eo" (go) for us to work on. He did a great job on it! Thanks for your hard work tonight, buddy!
