Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, the student and I reviewed for his upcoming chapter test. This unit covers integration and its properties when evaluating integrals. The student and I reviewed definite integrals recently for his quiz as well as the fundamental theorem of calculus. As we worked through his test review packets, he did very well with these types of problems. His main concern was reviewing the various approximation sums: right, left, midpoint, and trapezoid approximations. He made sure he could recall the various sums on his own, as well as breakdown where each term comes from in the formula. He completed the review packet and felt confident with the types of problems that he could face on the exam. To wrap up, we noted certain properties of definite integrals that he should commit to memory as well as topics he plans to look over again before the exam."
"The student has a test coming up this week on transformations of graphs of the basic trigonometric functions sin, cos, sec, and csc. I started from the beginning with her to show her how coefficients affect amplitude and periodicity. Then, we looked at how to move the graphs up/down/left/right. Next, I showed her how to approach questions that have multiple transformations going on and in which order she should work on them. Finally, we went over how to graph the transformations of secants and cosecants using transformations of the parent functions."
"We started by working on some interval identification. The student has a pretty good handle on this, but can still work on a few of the more difficult intervals (m7, M6, m6). I shared an online tool for working on interval identification."
"Today we reviewed for a biology exam she would be taking on Macromolecules: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids. I asked her if she completed the diagnostic test or the homework practice problems. I believe she is taking the exam seriously. In regards to her biology studying, she was more confident in understanding her notes to be prepared for her test. She had a better understanding of the terminology that described the functions and properties, and structure of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids."
"We covered general musical background, time signatures, chord building, and the circle of the 5ths. She was enthusiastic and determined. We practiced a lot of pattern recognitions and clues. I saw a lot of encouraging signs. She seems willing to master integral concepts and absorbed a great deal during the session."
"We spent the entire session using the tutoring prep tools. We concentrated on using flashcards for word analogies and quantitative geometric problems. He is getting a good sense for questions he should be able to successfully answer. We discussed strategies for aggressively approaching these problems."
