How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

As a high school student, you might be wondering about the different types of standardized testing. The PSAT, or preliminary scholastic aptitude test, is a shortened version of the SAT you've probably heard about, too. But why not just wait and take the full SAT? There are two reasons. First, your PSAT score could give you a very good idea of how well you'll do on the SAT. Second, if you score high enough on the PSAT, you'll qualify sooner for scholarships and other financial aid for college, and that money will be waiting for you when you graduate. The highest possible score is 1520. The highest possible SAT score is 1600. Maybe you've heard from other students, or people you know, that the PSAT isn't important. In truth, it is. That's why you should prepare now. And you can do that with help from a tutor. Varsity Tutors could help you connect with a professional PSAT tutor in Lowell, MA.

The benefit of tutoring is individual attention and encouragement. Your tutor can be a mentor, and also a role model. They'll take the time to get to know you, and tailor their lesson plan to suit your personality and interests. The PSAT has three sections: Evidence-Based Reading, Writing & Language, and Math. A tutor will take you through each section so you'll have a better idea of what to expect on test day. You can ask as many questions as you need, and receive immediate feedback and assistance. It's all about helping you reach your goal. To connect with PSAT tutoring in Lowell, call Varsity Tutors today.

I reviewed the students' homework with them, including a math section and a reading section. I introduced to them the math concepts of solving algebraic equations with one step and with two steps, and they worked several problems of each kind. We went through Chapter 10 of the SAT book, which is about improving sentences, and they answered several questions. Their homework is to complete section 4 (a reading section) of Practice Test 2.

I started the session quickly reviewing the student's previous SAT Scores. From there, we talked about how to set up and brainstorm the essay, in addition to the paragraph structure of the essay itself. From there, we moved into sentence completion and passage based questions. We ended the session with some math review, mainly the idea of plugging in answer choices and plugging in your own numbers for questions with variables. I believe the first session went very well.

The student and I took a first look at the SAT multiple choice writing questions, analyzed the most frequent found in the grammar and style questions, and practiced several sets of questions. The student has a good grasp of grammar, and is getting a good grasp of the kinds of complicated structures he can expect to see on the test. We also reviewed some of the vocabulary he is working on; he is identifying useful word stems and parts from a set of vocabulary cards. Toward the end of the session we also analyzed essay examples scored from 1-5. Before our next meeting the student is going to analyze two level 6 essays, looking for the elements that make them "6" essays instead of 5s or 4s.

We went over the sentence completions sections she completed for homework, and the vocab words that she memorized. We then reviewed arithmetic math topics, and completed practice/example questions together.

Now we have moved on to application of the skills, so the next few lessons will be like this. A less guided lesson plan, instead we simply match the practice hw to the work in the session, and then try and work through and find the student's weaknesses in natural occurrences, and work them out that way. She is learning quickly, and just needs to keep consistent with her practice.
