Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the ACT Math practice test I had asked him to complete, analyzing the troublesome items, of which there were much fewer than last time, and reviewing tips to avoid future trouble with similar questions. We also looked at his ACT Reading practice test, on which he only missed three questions, all of which were of the same type, making clear what his weakness in the section was. We also discussed time-management strategies for the Reading test before wrapping up for the day."
"The student and I went over a brief overview of the ACT by going through a practice test and looking at each section. I then taught her a strategy for reading comprehension, where she splits up questions into general and specific questions and summarizes the questions beforehand. She also did 3 practice passages for reading. We then moved on to science, where I taught her strategies for identifying answering different types of questions. She also did 3 practice passages for science."
"We got in some good practice with the English section by going through some passages together. We also went through the math and science sections from the diagnostic and reviewed those topics as needed."
"The student and I covered various topics pertaining to her chemistry final, and went over the study packet her teacher gave her. We then spent some time covering some unclear math topics in preparation for her advanced algebra final."
"Met with the student and reviewed his math and English projects. He had received an A on his last math exam and was very proud of himself. In regards to his math, he had to create a flier that advertised discounted prices to his store. We worked on creating this flier together and I commended him on his prowess at percentages. For his English project, he had to complete reports relating to "Ender's Game.""
"The student and I met and discussed his extended needs in Environmental Science. The course he is taking contemplates a summer project paper of about 30 pages length. The overarching themes he wants to explore are sustainable practices which address issues that have arisen mostly in the last two centuries. We discussed deforestation, natural and man-made desertification, and large-scale agriculture and ocean over-fishing/depletion. Although we touched on issues such as alternative energy sources and the failure of urban growth boundaries, his paper will probably emphasize the former topics."
"Evaluated prior test preparation, developed a study plan for the next 3 weeks, learned effective strategies for solving problems and evaluating passages, completed high-yield problems in biology, chemistry, and physics, and completed a verbal passage and questions."
"Began with a review of the kinematic equations and their graphical representations. Then covered projectile (parabolic) motion: the kinematic variables (d, v, a) in terms of their vector (x and y) components."
"During the session we continued our review of the physical sciences section of the MCAT. We focused on physics, covering material across two chapters in the MCAT prep book. These chapters covered mechanics, particularly focusing on topics such as forces, application of Newton's laws for linear motion, and pulley systems. We also reviewed the ideas of momentum and impulse, and discussed how collisions are classified as either elastic or inelastic. In addition, we solved various questions that involved the application of the formulas and ideas covered in these topics."
"Today we went over meiosis, female and male reproductive systems and embryology. We finished with a bunch of hormone and meiosis questions. Over the weekend she took an MCAT (gold standard) and got a 28, which is a big improvement from a 23 and those tests are typically harder. Before her MCAT she is going to continue to take practice tests and email me with any questions. I think she will do great!"
"During this session, the student and I went over her study schedule for the month of June. The goal is to complete all the material in her MCAT books by July 1st. We also reviewed the approach to the verbal reasoning section of the MCAT, including the timing of each passage, the paragraph mapping, and predicting answers. We went through three practice passages, and then she did a passage pair in 16 minutes, which is what her goal will be for the timing of the MCAT. We went over the answers together after. We'll continue to work on the timing of the sections and reading the passage at an appropriate speed so that she can fully retain information about the passage. Before our next session she will complete the chapters on her study plan and do a full length verbal reasoning section."
"The student and I went over another math section of the college entrance exam. She was able to complete the section with time to spare. She seems to be in pretty good shape so far to do well on the math section, pending further practice."
