Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent the first half of the session reviewing the nervous system and briefly a bit of kinetics. We began by discussing the different ion channels that are found in neurons and their respective functions. We then worked through the steps of the action potential in full from neurotransmitter binding to neurotransmitter release. Next, we defined some of the major areas and structures of the brain, the major neurotransmitters, and the key points of contrast between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. After this, we briefly practiced finding rate laws. We then finished the session with a review of our CARS strategies and several practice passages in philosophy."
"The student has a paper due next week that deals with stop and frisk. He needed help coming up with a counterargument to further strengthen his argument. We came up with different counterarguments as well as arguments that counter the counterargument."
"Today, the student and I discussed her daily and monthly goals in the context of her specific target score, which I encouraged her to set sooner rather than later to frame her studies. Afterward, we began a holistic overview of behavioral sciences through a passage online related to obesity and social networks. We applied active reading strategies to contextualize and understand the passage before looking at the related questions. We touched upon many peripherally-related concepts in psych/sociology, including conformity, groupthink, cognitive dissonance, stereotype threat, etc. By tying in many different topics and examples, my goal was to help the student balance her strong sense of intuition with potential topics to cover on her own before our third session. I also encouraged her to come up with a detailed study plan before we meet next week so I can provide my feedback and advice."
"The student and I reviewed a couple of plugging in questions from her homework. We then finished plugging in strategies for algebra, covering PITA and MBT. We moved to definitions and basics for quant. I assigned PS 2, DS3, and SC 1, 2, and 3 for homework. Next session, we will pick up with SC and RC."
"The student has been working through the first math chapters of his lesson book as well as doing some questions from official materials, and so we picked up with the main issues he's been having during. Number properties and arithmetic were thus on the agenda. We spent a fair amount of time discussing remainders and the properties of 11, as well as the usefulness of having memorized the decimal and percentage equivalents of the simple fractions."
"The student was able to get through the substitution section of the GMAT prep book and able to readily apply the concepts on practice problems during our session today. We agreed that moving her test date back is a good idea. We discussed a study schedule."
