How can a Writing tutor help you?

Proper writing skills are an important component of academic and professional success. Students begin to learn how to write proper sentences at a young age. As they advance grades, they begin to learn more challenging concepts, like persuasive writing, complex grammar, and how to create fiction. Having strong writing skills is essential for passing standardized tests like the Kentucky Performance Rating of Educational Progress, the ACT, or their End-of-Course exam. If your child is struggling with his or her writing skills, Varsity Tutors may help you connect with a professional writing tutor in Louisville, KY.

Our educational directors enjoy helping students in Louisville find independent writing tutors, and may help you find the tutor who is right for your child. Their tutor may teach them how to write essays, professional letters, and prepare for the ACT Quality Core Test. Whatever your child's goals are, their writing tutor is happy to aid them in reaching those goals.

Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Louisville, KY Writing tutoring
We started off the session with some worksheets I had created. One contained sentences with multiple errors that the student then had to correct. He did well, still having trouble noticing when words are capitalized that shouldn't be. Otherwise stellar. We then moved on to a brief root words review and some exercises with suffixes and prefixes. We then went over his Baskerville essay, continuing our journey through it, going sentence by sentence and fixing errors. Since we are coming to the end of his essay there are more and more errors. I think this is because when he got to the end he rushed, eager to get it done. He will go over the last two paragraphs again and expand and work on some of the wording.

We played Scrabble and continued to work on present tense writing, but this time adding another idea to have a conjunction in his sentence. The student struggled with this and we will resume in our next session.

We went through the organization of the first half of the paper and tightened everything up. I gave her thorough comments on her entire paper that we then reviewed to make sure she understood. We discussed the structure of the second half of her paper. We discussed parallel structure in lists. For tomorrow she is going to work on my comments, revise the structure of the second half of her paper, and work on fleshing out the second half of her paper.

The student and I had a good session yesterday working on preparation for her Pre-AP course. We began with an introduction to citation -- focusing on both the use of quotation marks and in-text citations and on the proper format for citations both in-text and at the end of papers. This is an entirely new field for her -- so she clearly finds it a bit intimidating, although it's a fairly standard procedure (that she could reproduce on her own). We'll work on making this instinctive as she works towards her first papers. For the second half of the session, we focused on an introduction to Greek literature (a handout to review from the teacher) which both introduced Greek culture and used a set of terms to define certain polarities in Greek culture. She listens carefully -- but definitely still needs the prompts to repeat what we've talked about -- she tends not to internalize information immediately. As a result, it's important to bring home knowledge with very specific examples drawn from life or musicals, and to repeat information. We had a particularly productive discussion of a difficult epic simile -- she initially had trouble understanding the (very hard!) passage and doubted her own ability to understand. But as we broke down the simile into sections, she was easily able to digest the information and to see its utility. I think one huge growth area for us this semester will be confidence: I am hopeful that we can build her confidence in her own abilities of analysis, and therefore help her articulate her ideas with less hesitation. Very good session!

Today was my first session with this student. We spent time getting to know each other before getting to work on a tentative schedule for the next few weeks. We then looked over each of his classes for the semester and discussed the assessments and grading structures. I asked him what he did with his other tutor recently and he told me he prepared for class. We discussed his goals in life and what he hoped to get out of our work together. I told him that I was excited to help him accomplish his academic goals and that I believe he can succeed and improve as a reader and a writer. He seemed excited and was open and friendly with me.

We went through the suggested edits I had sent to him, got him to fill out the remaining blanks and write the concluding paragraph, and generally made sure that he felt good about the paper he's going to turn in.
