Today we reviewed the student's homework. He did a great job focusing on his work and completing the pages. After working on the math page, he read to me for 30 minutes and did a great job recalling the events in the story. Although he needs to work on his fluency, sight word practice will help with a lot of the words he struggles with when reading a more challenging text. He does a very good job reading the words and figuring out most of the unknown words.

We covered the student's new spelling list first. He wrote each word next to its definition and identified its part of speech. Then he read about soccer and recorded the beginning, middle, and end of what he read. His reading comprehension is improving very well. He is working on reading each word steadily when he comes to words that he's not sure about. For our next session, I plan to help him practice his spelling, fill out another reading log, and study vocabulary.

The student worked on short vowel sounds, still focusing on "b" and omitting almost any "d" in order to avoid confusion and get the "b" firmly in her mind. She is reading the book we have worked with for several sessions, with more confidence each time. We are continuing to use the sand tray for added kinesthetic practice. We also worked some with her spelling words for the week, using rainbow tracing to help her memorize them as well as applying the skills and concepts that she has learned so far where we could.

We worked on phonics and letter recognition. The student is making good progress with letter sounds, and he enjoys singing the letter sounds song. He usually gets the correct answer. I believe he can recognize A, B, C, E, F, H, S, X and W. He was in much better spirits today.

The student did well for his first two times officially working with me. I brought out colored letters to go over letters and colors with him. He really liked these letters. Since he liked them, I let him play with them, sort them, and talk about them. We also used them to spell his name. He was able to recognize his name without me saying anything. We also worked on writing his name, letters, and shapes. He did a great job on his triangle.
