Session Summaries by Middle School Math Tutors

Louisville, KY Middle School Math tutoring
The student had already completed his statistics by the time I arrived, and he was very confident with the material. Because he was already very comfortable with the material he had learned so far, I taught him the next lesson- quartiles and interquartile range. We first used examples from his textbook. Once he understood those examples, I gave him sample problems that I made to demonstrate real world uses for analyzing data using the interquartile range. He learned these new concepts very quickly, and he is already confident in the material. The second student will take a unit test tomorrow on solving quadratic equations. We went over the unit test in her textbook in order to review the material. The second student is quick at factoring, although she often prefers to use the quadratic formula.

The student and I started on his homework for today. It covered probabilities, disjoint events, and direct and indirect variables. He was able to do most of it on his own, and only made a few errors. After we finished with that, we went back over four problems from his last assignment that were wrong, and added them to his current homework. Once that was done, we worked on practicing adding like terms. Once he was finished with the sheet, we went up to the computers and he played a few levels of a vector coordinates game that his teacher had linked on the school site. He has about two weeks left until the end of this school year, and he should be getting review packets soon.

The student had another excellent session today, working on 8th grade material with slope-intercept form. She learned and practiced slope formula, as well as interpreting the slopes of graphs. We will continue this on Friday, as well as wrapping up other algebraic equations in word form. The last 20 minutes of class was spent creating an online account, so that she could practice her material online. I will be reviewing her progress on this account for her homework.

The student had told me over the week that in class they had started learning about simplifying exponential expressions and that he wanted to review that with me and go over some of the more complicated problems involving more than one variable. He said that he had done well so far, but that he wanted more practice and did not feel entirely confident in his skills yet. I reviewed the product rule and power rule of exponents with him and began a brief introduction/ explanation into why any base with an exponent of zero simplifies to 1. From there, we went through practice problems from a worksheet that I found online. I went through two examples, before having the student try problems where I would correct him whenever he first made a mistake. Then I had him work through a problem set independently, only giving him feedback and having him correct himself once he had a final answer.

We focused mainly on factoring and expansion. The student was struggling most with applying the term on the outside of the parentheses to everything on the inside. He was very eager to start problems but often jumped into them and missed key steps like the term application one mentioned above. I drew up some practice problems with factoring that he worked on during our session, and a win was that a problem he had entered the day totally stuck on made sense to him by the end.
