How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination, commonly called the ISEE, is an admissions test that competitive primary and secondary schools use to determine whether or not students should join the school's academic programs. There are three levels for elementary, middle, and high school students. Varsity Tutors may help your child have more productive ISEE study sessions by finding them a tutor in Louisville.

The elementary program is designed for fourth and fifth grade students, the middle level for sixth and seventh grade students, and the upper level is designed for students in eighth through eleventh grades. While these tests are all very similar, the complexity and difficulty of the questions increase with each test level. The exam is comprised of five sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math achievement, and an essay. Each section, except the essay, consists of multiple-choice questions. Call our directors to find an ISEE tutor in Louisville who may try to help your child work to try to attain more confidence with the ISEE.

The student was working on some drills when I arrived so we just continued with them. It was basic math that he seemed very confident in. For most for of the time we focused on a math section practice test. I timed him so he gets used to managing it. He did pretty well! Only 6 wrong and most of the issues are topics and methods that he hasn't seen yet. Algebra is still new to him but I am relating it to familiar concepts to show him through some problems.

The student worked on the quantitative section of the ISEE test. She did very well with more than half of the items accurate. The items that she was unable to do were from the 6th grade level, such as probabilities and pre-algebra. However, we did cover some techniques such as creating a table (proportionality/function related) to discover patterns and working on problems by simplifying them. She seemed to do well. We did not cover details on probabilities, but I suggested that she wrote down new ideas she learned of the concept from our discussion. I also left with some suggestions that she should work on rounding fractions and comparing them to benchmarks: closer to zero, half or whole.

The student and I worked on the math and essay sections of ISEE. In math, I taught her rules of divisibility, how to quickly determine quotients, and how to quickly and accurately solve word problems. Previously, she struggled to answer math questions quickly, and she made great strides in this respect. In the essay, we reviewed how to quickly select a thesis and appropriate evidence, what evidence to include, and what to look for when proofreading. For homework, she should write an essay and complete a math drill.
