Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

Louisville, KY English Grammar and Syntax tutoring
This session was utilized to give the student support in English. The student and I discussed his upcoming essay on censorship. The student had an essay draft already written. We discussed revisions and modifications to the draft. I offered suggestions for making the essay stronger using evidence and structure. The student's mother requested that the student spend more time developing his essay skills prior to each tutoring session, so I gave him resources to help him work independently between sessions. Our next scheduled session is April 20th.

The student was wonderful and attentive. When I arrived she had already been working on her statistics. She was focused and willing to put in all the extra effort to make sure she got her essay right. We went over her essay structure and what the professor in her class was looking for. In addition, we spent some extra time covering proper comma usage and whether to use italics or quotations. I am going to send links to some tools I showed her during the session, including a citation tool and some exercises for her free time so that she can continue to build on what we worked on in our session.

We worked on her Comparison Paper using Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Time Machine. The student finished the outline, found 2+ quotes from the books for each argument, and wrote the introduction.

To start our session, we looked at the poetry assignment I gave the student at the end of our last session. She did a good job of following the assignment, writing a poem rooted in concrete imagery with clear, strong language. We talked about the poem's strengths and some grammar issues within it. She is preparing for the state assessment next week and so we discussed some of the things she might expect on the test. We reviewed some grammar topics including parts of speech, commonly confused homonyms, correct pronoun usage, and prepositional phrases. We looked at some passages and questions she received in school and discussed some test taking strategies. I hope she is able to relax and take her time with her upcoming testing! As we discussed, many of the grammar and other errors she makes happen when she rushes herself, as there's a lot she understands but doesn't yet do automatically (correct usage of they're/their/there, for example).

This was my first session with the student. We got to know each other a little first. Then she emailed me a copy of her paper, London, which is due tomorrow. She read it out loud to me, and I followed along and made editing suggestions on the document. Then I sent the suggestions back to her, and we talked through them together. Most of my suggestions had to do with splitting up compound sentences. She understood why those sentences needed editing and how to do it; she just needed prompting. I noticed that she was very good at using the online platform, and she knew how to explain her thought processes out loud. Her teacher had made some more in-depth suggestions about varying sentence structure, so we worked together on rearranging a few sentences in accordance with her teacher's notes. We plan to meet again on Wednesday.

The student is reading Romeo and Juliet, and having trouble understanding the 16th century vernacular. We went through translating Elizabethan English into modern American English. The student seemed more comfortable with the scene after doing so, and was subsequently able to complete homework questions with very little assistance.
