The student wanted to review graphs pertaining to demand and supply curve shifts, specifically focusing on scenarios related to a reduction in the cost of X-ray change, an increased graduation rate for physicians, and the impact of eliminating smoking upon the market for hospital services. She had a good understanding of how graphs in her textbook could be applied to explain curve shifts. We also reviewed questions related to the determination of an "actuarially fair premium" and the additional admin costs that may increase the premium, community rating (focusing on "general" even premiums vs. "health patient" ), lower premiums, and the impact of insurance upon total expenditures. Today, we discussed her research paper topic on the impact and relationship between childhood obesity and economics. She was starting out well with her research and already had excellent ideas in mind in terms of the direction she was going to take. She narrowed the approach down to a literature review, and I forwarded several links/articles that could be used to support her initial research.

The student completed his homework which included problems on standard deviation and variance of a stock's price, capital asset pricing model of a stock, as well as returns on portfolio given the weight and probability of the state of economy in a given situation. Calculating the standard deviation and variance (volatility) of a portfolio can be a tedious process; however, it is not overwhelmingly difficult. I encourage him to review the copious notes on the more complex problems that I wrote out for a better understanding of these topics.
