On Monday, the student finished her English paper, which ended up being 8 full pages with 9 sources. I think it was a very successful essay. Since it is worth 30% of her final grade, we wanted to ensure that it would get a decent grade. Her essay was on universal healthcare, which involved giving historical and current context, the opposite side of the argument, a rebuttal, argument, and suggestions for future solutions.

We spent some time discussing 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' especially the discussion question that the student is preparing for after break (are there characters in the book that we should feel sorry for?). This led us to a wider discussion of whether there are clear-cut heroes and villains in the novel. We studied the character of Mr. Ewell, finding evidence in the book that attempted to explain why he acted the way he did. We discussed whether understanding a character more made him more or less sympathetic. We spoke again about personal narratives, and explored the reasons why teachers might set such a task in the context of a novel. We listed the elements that teachers might be looking for in such narratives, which were very similar to those looked for in an essay. The writing exercise today was to write the events of chapter two from the perspective of another character. The student chose Mr. Ewell and produced a very good piece of work. We then talked a bit about the styles of narration and the challenges of 1st person narration over 3rd person or variable focalization (like in Game of Thrones).
