We briefly covered the final project the student has for his computer science course. After outlining the big picture details, we felt pretty confident that he could fill in the gaps. Then, we switched gears and looked at a practice exam for the final in that class. It discussed interfaces a lot, so I gave him a primer on interfaces. We went through the rest of the questions on the practice exam, which mainly involved understanding abstract data types and how to define a class.

The student and I worked through the majority of the posted online materials for his Chapter 2 test retake on Tuesday. He says he plans on destroying the test, and I am sure he is capable. He also says that he will make an honest attempt at his homework that I gave him. Good luck!

We reviewed the material that was going to be covered in the final exam which consisted of loops, if statements, arrays, functions, recursion, file handling and sorting. We discussed bubble sort and how we need a temporary variable to successfully switch the values within the variables. I also introduced Boolean statements to control the sorting algorithm. The student was having the most trouble with understanding the concept of the Fibonacci recursion function. I walked him through it step by step also explaining how the return statement exits out of the function ignoring the rest of the code followed by that statement.

We went over the final test, started to cover objects and classes more in depth, and we started to code a program together. The student didn't seem to really struggle today. He seemed to like the coding part the most. I learned today that he is a hands on learner more so than a visual learner.

Today the student and I started work on her first project of the semester, a file tree search tool that introduces a number of new programming concepts such as recursion, modular design, and user input. This represents one of the larger and more complicated projects she has had to tackle, but she has jumped in head-first and is succeeding wonderfully. Her debugging skills and excellent eyes for errors have served her well, and her general competency is growing after every single line of code. I left her with the remaining requirements of her project to approach, as well as a call to start collaborating with her lab partner and updating him on our progress today. I look forward to working with her again on this project.
