Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began tonight's session by reviewing the format for the essay portion of the test. We reviewed two key sample questions. We discussed the best way to organize and complete the essays. We then went on to complete last minute mathematics review."
"During this session, I took a look at the topics to be covered for the upcoming semester. During the session, we worked on a worksheet that involved applying the Pythagorean Theorem to find lengths, perimeters, and area. Since this was out first session for the new semester, we also decided on a weekly meeting time."
"The topic today was functions of functions and how to solve them. Once the student understood the basic structure of what they were asking for in these questions, she implemented it well. The domains of these newly created functions was also covered, and then we moved on to inverses of functions. Solving for inverses was easily grasped as well. We ended with logarithms, but were unable to complete that section so we will continue it on Monday."
"The student was not able to complete a computerized practice exam due to technical difficulties. I asked that she do this for the next session, as it is the best way for her to prepare for the actual exam. We worked for the first time on the verbal reasoning section, which we have not previously touched on because she scored very well on this section on her diagnostic. We discussed question types and developed strategies for each type (anticipation for sentence completion, skimming and summarizing points as well as active reading for passages). She did very well on these exercises. For next session, I ask that in addition to completing an online practice exam, she finish the practice questions in the verbal section."
"We worked back from applications of integration to limits and applications of differentiation, just to see her level of confidence and understanding of each section. The newer portions covered seem to be going well, however applications of derivatives may need more work on. It was good to see her understanding the concepts we covered last session. Impressed with her work so far."
"Worked with the student on some SAT sections - 2 writing, 2 reading, and 2 math. She is retaking the test on May 4th, so we are planning on going over what she missed on her previous exam and then focusing on the sections that she needs to work on the most."
"Today we continued with subtracting fractions as well as fractions of a part. We also reviewed farms in social studies, completed a chapter in the reading comprehension and continued to work in the handwriting book. Great session!"
"This session the student and I focused exclusively on physics. Topics emphasized include equilibrium and not equilibrium forces, friction, and linear motion. He was well prepared and was familiar with every problem we went over. I think we made significant progress on the topics addressed. I reviewed the chemistry questions he has been having trouble with and there are several key areas where we need to work. It is imperative that we focus on chemistry next time, as well as go over a couple verbal passages. I have given him two verbal passages to review immediately prior to our next meeting. Overall the student is doing well but the exam is getting close and he really needs to increase the amount of time every day and the number of questions every day."
"The student and I only met for about an hour this time to discuss her goals and to set up a plan for the rest of the sessions. She is planning to take the assessment test early December so we have about 8 weeks to prep for it. We are going to focus on biology to start, then move to physics and save chemistry for the end since she's a chemistry major and that's her strongest subject. She seems to be comfortable with the material so the plan is for her to study the material and work through problems on her own, and we will focus on working through the concepts and questions she doesn't understand fully during our sessions."
"Started with verbal practice test 1, 45 minutes to complete 7 passages and 40 questions. He finished 5 passages and got 24 out of 29 completed questions correct. Then went on to bio and physics problem sets. Bio problem set 1: 5/10. Bio problem set 2: 7/10. Bio problem set 3: 7/10. HW: 5 sets of each physics, bio, and verbal problem sets that I will send via email."
"We covered portions of Exam 10 today, including Ksp problems, though other questions from the exam will be covered later. We then reviewed physical science concepts, including quantum numbers, nuclear decay, thermodynamics, torque, and momentum (elastic, inelastic, totally inelastic). We will go other a few diagnostic exams next time."
"We went over his PS section for his most recent practice test. We will go over the rest next session. He did well, but still has room for improvement. The student is struggling with content and time management. He has the test to review before next session tomorrow. No concerns."
