Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed 5 pages of Sentence Completion problems and we covered SC strategies such as using POE to eliminate at least two answer choices for difficult problems before choosing an answer. I asked her to do approximately half an hour of SC problems or PBR problems a day until our next tutoring session."
"Today, we worked primarily on math because the student wanted some help through math chapter 16. I've decided to work through the problems with him and, if he needs more help, I will provide an extra problem on the spot for him to work on. He was becoming more confident towards the end. For the last three sessions, I am going to work through a series of math problems with him. I left him with a reading section to do for homework as I feel he is the strongest in that area, and we should devote more time to the other areas during our session."
"This session, the student and I covered sentence completion and paired passage questions on the SAT. In terms of paired passage questions, we discussed summarizing based on skimming and cause vs. result questions. In terms of sentence completion, we covered root words, prefixes and key words in a sentence which indicates the correct answer. We went over the practice section of the SAT he completed and went through another practice section together. He is very strong when it comes to strategy for answering these types of questions and now will work on vocabulary. I am sending him a link where he can practice vocabulary and am also forwarding a customized practice test which will focus on this area. He's making great progress."
"We spent a lot of time working on math today, especially test-taking strategies with math. We're working on time management and we talked a bit about how to better manage time. Next we worked on setting up word problems, trig functions, and properties of geometry as they are our areas to study. I left her with homework in those areas."
"Today the student and I focused most on Science for the practice test for homework. After talking through the homework questions, we did practice science questions in biology, chemistry, and physics. We spent a very short time reviewing subject/verb agreement rules. For the last half hour, she and I worked on revising her essay; Her work already beautifully conveys her personality, so we discussed how to strengthen major themes throughout. Her homework is the English and Science sections from the practice test."
"I had the student do a full-length, timed, 60 minute Math section today. Afterward, we debriefed on the section overall and worked more thoroughly on problems he had difficulty with. I assigned him to research two geometry/trigonometry problems that were hard to understand. Also, I again assigned him to read the sample Essays in the study guide."
"This was the student's final session before her exam. We went through English and science sections to work on pacing in large chunks. In the English section, she missed a total of only four problems from three passages and finished early every time. I expect her to score very high in English. In science, she did perfectly in some sections. We talked about starting with the passages that look the easiest, and we reviewed the strategy of condensing information into ratios, correlations, or visuals. Last, we talked about strategies for the test day. Her parents were very supportive and said they felt she had gained a lot from the tutoring. Her test will be this weekend."
"Yesterday was our final review before the student's ACT and we did basic reviews of all subjects, as well as practiced her writing style for the ACT essay. We went over test-day procedures and tips, and talked about making sure she stays focused and optimistic throughout the test. With our remaining 2 hours of tutoring, she has requested that I review college essays and apps with her, so we will set that up at some point in the near future."
"Today we covered reading, focusing on summarizing the passage and the question and choosing between two good answers. We also did some practice with summarizing passages from a non-fiction book of the student's choice."
"Here are the math topics we covered: slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, percentages and percent changes, quadratic equations (factoring and quadratic formula), and the difference between rational and irrational numbers. During the second session I found the student's retention of material satisfactory for all topics except solving quadratics by factoring, so we reviewed the procedure for solving problems by that method. I also needed to clarify a small point about percent changes, but his understanding of that topic was generally solid."
"This was my final session with the student today. Again, we hit math hard and she did complete many problems on her practice examination. Moreover, many of the problems we went over regarding the slopes of lines, the distance formula, calculating midpoint, and so on were analogous to the ones she had on her upcoming exam. Though her test date is on Saturday, she might take it again if she is not satisfied with her scores. However, based on the small amount of time that I spent with her I believe she has done very well."
"This was our final session before the student takes the ACT, and we spent time going over the reading and science sections to make sure that she is feeling confident about these before the exam. Using the review's strategy of looking for keywords, her reading score has really gone up and gotten to the level that she wants it to be at. However, this strategy does not always work for every passage, since there are sometimes passages that lack keywords and questions that are more global. She is very solid and competitive for college admissions."
