Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, I started by having the student practice writing a single paragraph based on an essay prompt. We discussed where and how it could be improved after discussing its positive points. We then moved on to writing and critical reading sections, moving through the questions individually in an exercise where the student pretended to be the tutor and explained her reasoning for selecting answers to me. This seemed to help and she had a higher number of correct answers in this session than any other. We finished the session with a review of parts of speech, focusing on prepositions."
"During today's session, the student and I spent a lot of time learning new vocabulary words and practicing especially math questions. We worked on sentence completions questions and for homework: 1) Add in today's vocab words to flashcard set, 2) Complete the Math and practice tests assigned last week."
"We worked on reading, English, and science today. The student is improving across the board, especially in English. We tried a new strategy in reading, which is to strategically skim the passage, leaving more time to answer the questions. Science is something we're working on as well."
"Today we started looking at some of the harder math and English problems, and I identified a few areas where the student needs more assistance. For the next session I plan to start reviewing these areas, as well as helping her get more intensive vocabulary and grammar practice."
"We identified the problems the student was having with the Critical Reading section, and reviewed question types and styles for this section of the test. He identified the problems he thought he was having with the test the most, and we went over some strategies for this subject on the test. We then went over some practice tests and reviewed how he got the answers that he did."
"This was my first session meeting with the student. He didn't have a completed diagnostic graded, so I gave him a diagnostic to work on to assess where he stands. He currently is scoring at a 590. We will being to review conic sections, asymptotes, fractional powers, 3D geometry, Spheres, and review indirect variation. On his diagnostic, we went over combinatorics problems, low of cosines, and symmetry of graphs and conics. I have assigned him another diagnostic to do for both Math and Physics."
"The student and I reviewed her original test results and her diagnostic test, then devised a study plan. Since most of the universities she is applying to focus on math and reading, we will first focus on her math performance."
"The student had an entire SAT practice completed, so we went over the questions in all the sections for most of the time during our tutoring session today. After tallying up the numbers of questions she got correct in all the sections, we calculated a range for her composite SAT score for this practice test: 2130-2330! This is very good and right up there with her goal score of 2150. Keep up the good work!"
"During the student's first session, I explained the general format of the test and some strategies. Then, I asked him to select the test that he was most worried about completing. He selected Reading. We completed an entire test and he scored a 27. He had most difficulty with the social science and humanities sections. I left him with a Math test to complete."
"We covered four sections out of the SAT Book in Practice Test One. She is to finish the test on her own and submit it for scoring. She has homework for both Critical Reading and Sentence Completions."
"During this session, we covered several topics and continued working together to complete practice question sets to help the student prepare for the ACT. We mainly focused on the English section, working through several essay passages and completing the associated question. Whenever the student had an issue with correctly answering a question, I would try to help by giving him advice and information about relevant rules of grammar, diction, and so on. I would help him see why the correct answer was correct, and how the incorrect answers could be eliminated. Overall, he reported that he has been feeling much more confident about all content areas of the test since beginning our tutoring sessions."
"The student and I totaled up the practice test that she had completed since our last meeting. She beat her goal of an 1800 score on the practice test and scored a 1860! She seemed to be feeling much more confident after this session and it is clear that she is getting the hang of the strategies of the test."
