Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I see a lot of improvement in the student, especially in math. She took another practice test, and her math score improved significantly, in the range of 100-150 points above what she scored on the SAT and on the previous practice exams. Her reading section score stayed consistent from the last practice exam, in the low-600's range. Her writing/grammar score was the best of the three, in the low-700's range. My plan is to work a bit more with her on the math, have her take another practice test or two, and then set her up with a study plan so that she can continue to prepare after we finish our sessions."
"The student reviewed all sections covered in his math class anticipating a test. He understands all concepts involving arithmetic, exponents, radicals, absolute values, linear equalities & inequalities, etc."
"This week the student and I covered the basics of the test. We discussed the tests format, length, types of questions, and how to use the answer sheet. The student seemed to understand what was to be expected on this test. In addition, we began working on both the math and verbal sections to get an understanding of where the student is in preparation. The student did very well with the analogies and similes on the verbal section. The student was very enthusiastic and willing to try any problem I presented. Next session, we will continue to focus on the math section of the test."
"The student and I worked on reading and math. The student did well with her comprehension of the text, and we will continue to work on sounding out difficult words and taking her time to read all of the text. The student also just started learning the recorder at school, so as a reward we worked on learning some more recorder notes together at the end of her session."
"Today we went through a practice test I assigned and figured out topics that she was not yet comfortable with yet. We added several things to her review sheet. We moved from math back to science, which he has immensely improved upon, and I assigned another practice test for next week."
"Today we worked on division. The student had a little trouble remembering the order of the steps. However, she has her times tables memorized, which will be a great help as she moves forward with dividing. We reviewed her homework sheet and also went over some practice questions from the state exam. We will work on dividing more tomorrow."
"We were able to finish an algebra packet given at school as a school project, for which the student later met with her classmates to review as a group. The topics covered were algebraic equations, how to find "x" given the perimeter and area of a rectangle, and completing the square. We also briefly covered some chemistry questions from her homework. Overall she achieved good progress."
"We prepared for his geometry test. Subjects covered included the geometric mean, the law of sine, the law of cosine, and using trigonometric functions. We also reviewed some algebra, the use of radicals, as well as geometry test strategies and common test questions/traps."
"We talked about prime factorizations as a method for reducing fractions. We reviewed how to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. We also discussed several tricks for reducing fractions quickly and accurately by looking for cancellations between the numerators and denominators."
"The topic of the day was classification and properties of triangles. We worked with different types of triangles to see what properties all triangles shared, and what properties distinguished certain triangles from others. The student had a very good first semester--his best in years, according to his mother. He passed every class and received As in two of his courses. His ability to learn quickly has also improved, as he now possesses a better foundation in math."
"The first part of the session we covered psychology and the second part we covered history. We wrote an exhaustive study guide for the former. My only concern, admittedly minor, was that the student hadn't put in quite enough time going over and memorizing the concepts on the flash cards; nevertheless it was a solid session."
"Today we worked on lesson 43 and finished 2 problems from lesson 44. Lesson 43 included perimeter, volume, area, and surface area problems. It also had review on expansion and factoring expressions. We also graphed problems and found equations."
