The student completed coordinate plane homework and the linear equations packet. We covered writing equations in two variables based on tables and word scenarios and even had a sneak preview of the distance formula and square roots (high school level)! Student was very positive. Student was far more fluent about the order of operations and was better able to distinguish between the rules of multiplying/dividing versus adding/subtracting exponents.

The student and I worked on problems he uploaded from his book covering trig identities and trig equations. He is getting a lot more comfortable with the trig identities especially and he has never exhibited much trouble with the equations so I think he is on a good track for his upcoming test.

Tutoring review by Sylvia in Los Alamitos, CA
A set of review problems covering Chapter 12 and some of Chapter 11 was assigned for homework. The concepts covered included exponents and roots. Specifically, finding the square roots of polynomials is a concept with which the student needs more practice. This assignment contained a multitude of problems, as with a test. After successfully working numerous problems, he starts to get concepts confused, forgetting how to solve problems just like ones he just completed. He goes into overload. We are pursuing different strategies to help eliminate this hindrance, one being that of resting/turning away from the work for a minute or two, then returning back to working problems. The student was pleasantly focused today, as he has been for a couple weeks now.

Tutoring review by Sean in Los Alamitos, CA
We continued to focus on the math section of the test. We used GMAT-level math to simulate the more challenging questions that she has been challenged by. In order to continue improving, she needs to do a few things: 1. Stop making minor calculation mistakes. This can be improved by showing work and being more focused and "in the moment." 2. Review fundamental concepts -- SAT questions are designed to challenge students who do not have a very firm grasp of the concepts that are being tested. We're working on "classifying" problems, identifying patterns among problems (right-brained thinking), and putting ourselves in the mind of the test maker. 3. Continue practicing -- This is important as well, especially redoing problems that she previously found difficult.

Tutoring review by Andrew in Los Alamitos, CA
We went over the student's most recent practice test. We went through the math section and looked at the math problems that took up a lot of her time and talked about time management strategy. Then, I noticed she was missing word problems, so we spent a good portion of the lesson doing practice ones. For homework, I gave her a worksheet to finish and then some arithmetic exercises aimed at decreasing the amount of small errors she makes.
