Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first session working with the student. His mother showed me his PSAT scores (very high in math, average in reading, low in writing). First I had him choose between 2 books to read in his spare time...he chose The Master and the Margarita. He is to read at least 50 pages by our next session. Second, I had him read aloud two short passages from an AP English test. We discussed the passages and then I set him loose on the essay prompt, which was to write a comparative essay. We discussed structure and his ideas, then he was able to write a couple of paragraphs. At the end of the session, I made a list of concepts we could work on to make his writing even better- thesis, introducing quotes, explaining quotes, conclusion, and transitions. I also gave him an article on how to revise and edit his own writing."
"The student and I had a really productive session today! We worked on her editing and revising her Sociology midterm essays. For her midterm, she had to answer three essay questions and produce a page-long response to each. She had drafts of all three essays, so we went through each essay one at a time. I had her read aloud each sentence of her essay to me, and we learned some grammar and mechanics conventions of the English language while doing so. By the end of our session, we had edited all three drafts for grammar issues, and now they just need to be typed! I feel really confident in the student's improvement in English!"
"This afternoon, I worked with the student on a project for his English class. He is doing incremental work leading up to a research paper on Lou Gehrig. Today we worked on constructing research cards on Gehrig's life. We spent most of our time learning to hone in on the most important information available. He improved his editing skills over the course of the session and was excited he was able to construct cards at a faster pace. I encouraged him to continue to edit his way through the remainder of his research and to reach out to me with concerns he might have before we meet again."
