Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Longmont, CO Test Prep tutoring
During my first session with this student, we discussed what he and his mother feel are his areas for most improvement and also some critical reading. He and his mother relayed that they would like for attention to be paid to all of the sections of the SAT, especially to the writing portion. He informed me that his language arts teacher notes his essays can be tangential without enough substantive explanation of his points. I plan to work on developing his timed essay writing skills during each of our sessions to follow. After answering some logistical questions, he and I worked on some sentence completion and passage-based reading questions of the critical writing section. He noted that, because vocabulary is not a strong area for him at present, the sentence completion questions can be challenging. As we worked through the questions and defined words that he was unfamiliar with along the way, I was pleasantly surprised by how well he performed. He answered seven of the ten questions correctly, and the questions he missed were definitely more difficult than the others. I was similarly pleased to see how well he performed on the passages. We read through the first passage together, explicating as we read each paragraph. For the most part, he has good retention of the material and doesn't need to refer back to the passage too often. However, he showed the proclivity to make assumptions about characters or ideas intimated in the passage that would lead him to select answer choices which should otherwise have been easily eliminated. I have expressed how important vocabulary practice outside of our sessions is, so I trust he will be diligent in his review.

Today, we decided to cover ACT math. To prep for it, the student did a practice exam from the book. Once he completed the test, we went through each of the problems that he got wrong and worked them out together to see what his thought process was and how he should approach the problem. We have also gone through all of the vocab and concepts from these sections, as well as some problems to help explain these ideas. I highly recommend making the words into flash cards as that helps with retention.

The student did well on the science passages. He is a slow reader, and we talked about how to manage that. He showed improvement on "main ideas" in logical reasoning after we talked about picking the answer that includes the most terms from the question. He will take some timed tests over the weekend.
