Longmont, CO Physiology tutoring
We worked through a worksheet of transition metal complexes focusing on naming and writing formulas, isomers, specifically geometric and optical, and molecular orbitals determining magnetism. After going through the concepts, the student was able to relay the correct information back to me and seemed like she was gaining more confidence in the concept. I sent her a flowchart for isomers, as well as tips and tricks for coordination and oxidation numbers.

For our session, we reviewed concept involving concentration and molarity for his upcoming quiz. We first discussed how molarity is a ratio of two units: moles per liter. We continued on to complete some of his homework problems and tackled additional practice problems. The biggest concern he has at the moment is remembering that the big 'm' (M) doesn't just represent moles, but moles/liter. The student and I had a great session. We worked on a previous unit in his class dealing with acids and bases. We're beginning to zero in on the parts of his knowledge that have the biggest holes in his knowledge. The plan is to spend the next session working some basics of the chemistry so that he can not only do the specific types of questions that his teacher gives, but so that he understands the material for future chemistry classes. Our next session is scheduled for Sunday.

Since we are preparing for every question type on the AP exam, we went through the old AP Physics B problems on modern physics. These include energy per photon, energy transitions in atoms, photon energy and momentum, and the photo-electric effect. The student was good at using the correct equations and putting the tiny numbers into his calculator by the end of the session.

I covered electrostatics and conceptual questions about charge transfer. The student had missed some classes so he needed clarification on how charges transferred. His attitude was fine. I showed him which equations to use and how to make sense of some of the problems. I did not leave him extra practice. I think he got an A- on his last test. The win is he seems to understand most of the problems.

The student is always so prepared that our time together is extremely productive. Today we went over galvanic cells and electrolysis. We practiced multiple choice techniques to get faster and made sure to cover the concepts in detail. This was a great session!
