The student is a very dedicated student who is facing some challenges in class due to lack of organization on his part. He understands the physics conceptually but has yet to master the math behind it. We will be working on improving in this area in our sessions.

We went over reaction rate chemistry & redox reactions. Frankly, she had a great intuitive understanding of the material. I think her big hang up was that the teacher hadn't gone through practice problems enough. Our focus was to establish a kind of algorithm for working through these problems that she could apply over and over, and she took that on readily. She did really well on the test we had prepared for the previous time.

Today we worked on gases. I covered the things that would be most important for the student's success on his test on Thursday. He had forgotten a lot of stoichiometry and was pretty unfamiliar with the material, but he was able to improve his ability to do stoichiometry problems and correctly use the ideal gas law by the end of our session. He has a basic understanding of kinetic energy and was doing pretty well at unit conversions.

I brought two old exams today to work through problems that can be expected to be seen on Exam 3. Today we focused on solubility products and the effects that will occur when a common ion is introduced into a solution. We worked through a number of these problems before moving on to nomenclature of complex ions. We answered all of the nomenclature problems from the past exams I brought and then looked at a few more from a bank of exam questions. Finally, we covered Gibbs free energy and discussed the impact of delta H and delta S on the value of delta G.

Another session, another problem set. This set was actually a great combination of the student's engineering knowledge and my chemistry knowledge. The topics ranged from flow rates and mass balance to equilibrium, ICE table and polymer chemistry. All in all we covered everything and finished on time and had everything answered.

The student had a few questions about thin film interference, so I put together a lesson on that phenomenon. Then, we practiced on an old AP Physics B exam, and she was able to solve it quite well. Then, we turned our attention to electromagnetism and found some excellent AP problems on which to practice. She needed frequent guidance at first, but she gained confidence as we went along.
